Rant/Ramble time on NEW parts

Post by propane1 »

So working on the Ferguson tractor, water pump was leaking and couldn’t finish the parade last week. Ordered pump and got it and it looked right,,,,, Well well well. You would think that if you bought a new part, ya could go home with it and just put it on, but noooo, had to modify the cotter pin holding the pulley/fan mount, so the pulley would fit on. I had went back to the dealer to see what they wanted me to do or them to do, before I touched it, and have no warranty. So got that fixed. Went back home. So then I tried the pulley and fan on new pump with new bolts to make sure that all fit. Didn’t fit. Could get one bolt in, second was hard to put in, next two wouldn’t go in. Centre to centre hole spacing was off. Jumpins. Back to the dealer I go. I didn’t really want to drill or wallo out the holes in the fan blade. So they suggested that or would get another pump. It was my call. Figuring new pump would be the same, I said I’ll do some thing with it. So I ended up taking the old fan/pulley mounting coupling off the old pump and putting it on the new pump. So there’s a days Beepin around to get the new part useable.
So pump is on motor now, will see how much farther I get before something else goes haywire.
Quite the professional way to put the drain hole in the bottom from the factory. !

That's gotta be frustrating. New part from the dealer you'd expect a perfect fit. I have to say I would not expect this. :sigh:

And there my friend's, the reason why you don’t use silicone for gaskets on a engine. Someone before me had this apart. There was no gasket on the thermostat housing. All orange silicone. Water pump just had a gasket. No silicone. So those owners who used red silicone had never put a pump on there.

Just because a part comes from the dealor don't not make it a factory part . Nor does it guaranty it will fit . But your odds are much better there . But with the older stuff . It is usually what they can find , just like you and I .

Definitively not a MF factory part Dave. But some factory made it and as far as I’m concerned it should be a better fit. Bolt holes that don’t line up, not able to get the pulley on and take a grinder to the cast iron to make a drain hole. ?
Very bad quality in my mind. Just my opinion.

I agree from a dealer you’d expect it to fit, but as Dave said now days that’s no guarantee. I’m thankful there is factory still making parts for the old stuff. I think the problem is they know there not going to sell a lot of whatever part they make for older equipment so to keep the profit margin where they need to be they run a very loose quality control program. Better to send the part out into the world and cross there fingers. IF it comes back they can eat to cost then or bring it back and redo it. If you had ordered another one it may have fit perfect.

All state ag parts may be a place to check in the future. They sell new and salvage parts for the old stuff. I’ve not needed a water pump yet, but I have ordered plenty of other stuff from them and have no complaints.

@Propane57 I’m not familiar enough with Ferguson to know, but is the old water pump rebuildable?

JSinMO. Yes I believe the pump is rebuildable. But I didn’t go that route. It was suggested to me to use this pump by a tractor mechanic.

That same pump may fit a number of different tractor from different years and there may be size changes as well .

Fits a few Ferguson’s and MF’s from early fifties to mid sixties.
