When it rains it pours

Post by Harry »

I'm finding the curse of the tractors breaking is shared equally amoung us. I was using my 444 last week I heard a squealing sound coming from the engine area. It turned out a bearning spun and the armature was scraping inside the starter generator. Being so busy in general I dropped it off at a local automotive electrical shop not to far away. I've used this old guy before and he does great work. He had the job done in one day and he showed me the old scrapped parts. He repalced the bearings, brushes, armature and an end cap. He said it is very quiet now and generates perfect. I hope to get it back on the tractor today.
Yesterday I was in the backyard tilling up the mess left over from the septic contractor. Everything was going fine and the tiller was doing a terrific job. I backed up to one of the vent pipes and noticed the tiller was down and I just had lifted it. I moved forward a bit and seen the oil underneath the tractor. I left the tiller down and quickly put the tractor in high gear and pulle it over to my stone driveway. Went in the shop grabbed a piece of cardboard and slid it between the rear wheels. It appears on of the hydraulic lines gave up the ghost. I was somewhat discussed so I walked away and I hope to look at this also.
They say things happen in threes, so I thinking what piece of equipment is going to quit next. I finished the tilling with my Troybilt which was a bit slower but got the job done.

I hate to hear it, Harry!
:headbash:

Let's hope item #3 is, "The Troybilt ran out of gas."

Right with you Harry, running older equipment and using hard, I guess it is expected. That being said, some guys I know with fancy new compact tractors have them at the dealer all the time. :$$:

Them old school guys are great. Sad they are becoming few and far between. I had an awesome guy for starters/alternators that left the area, everyone with equipment and the repair shops used him. Small home shop, huge supply of common replacements, tested and repaired things, and was fast and reasonable.

Last week the deck belt on the 448 shredded, the deck needs some spindle bearings so I thought I get it done while it's off the tractor. Then the 4118 project got forced to move up. The other day the :wife: says, "so now you have two tractors and neither one is working and the grass is going to need to be cut." :dizzy: :headbash:

Sure is good to know we're all in the same situation.

The starter generator is working fine, it starter right up but the light stayed on. I checked the votlage at the battery at WOT and it was jumping a bit but always over 12 volts. So I know it's charging fine.
I pulled the 646 into the shop and gave it a close look. One of the two hoses are leaking and shooting oil between the frame and the rear end. I'm going to take them off and get new ones made up at a local hydraulic shop.
The :wife: says your always working on a tractor. I said so it's my hobby and I like it. I don't say your always working on a puzzle or playing games on your phone do I. :106:

I have some troubles with the MF 7 tractor I took home to replace the Case 224 of its grass cutting duties. Belt driven clutch. Seem to not disengage at times, resulting in hard to shift, gears grinding when trying to shift, because the belt not disengaging from the pulley.
And running like a piece of you know what. But I did get the grass cut yesterday.
So that’s three tractors that need work. Out of 11 garden tractors, 3 down, 1 has been down since January, 3 don’t cut grass. So that leaves 4, I think. Hehe. Out of these 3 of them can cut grass. But no decks on them now. Would take some work to get those ready. I do have 1 lawn tractor that if I put a battery in it, it could cut grass. And another lawn tractor with a battery and a bit of foolin to get going, it could cut grass.
Jumpins. That took a lot of thinkin. And may not be completely correct. Any way. Always something.
