Case cylinder question.

The last few days I’ve been “digging air” with the 648 to get a better feel for it. The advice you guys gave me was on the money! You really have to have a light touch on the main boom and swing controls.

Just practicing when I can I’ve already gotten smoother with the controls, so I’m getting there.

I’m a previous post I mentioned I had a leak on the power steering cylinder, well its more that that now. I leaks like a sieve! So the question is where do you guys get seal kits for theses? Do you go to your local hydraulic shop or do you have a place online you trust?

Many of the case cylinders are quite simple in design. Will have to take a look in the parts manual. A hydraulic shop should have O-rings and seals.

@JSinMO I believe @Harry replaced the seals on one of his backhoe cylinders and he was in your position recently. Can you find the embossed model number on the end of the cylinder? Once you find that, finding a kit might be much easier.

I tried looking for the cylinder break down in the parts manual but it appears to have pages missing. So I couldn't see what is all in the cylinder. I would think the power steering cylinder would be pretty basic.

From my limited experience, recently rebuilding five cylinders. I would say find a local shop, take your cylinder apart and take it to the local shop and have them match up the O-rings and seals. Kits are fine but sometimes they give you more than what you need, so the cost is probably more than if you purchased just what you need. I purchased O-rings and seals from a local shop for three identical cylinders and the cost was twenty dollars more than the coast of a kit for one cylinder.

Agreed , when I wanted to replace the seals in the 2 post lift before setting it up I took the head and pistons into my local Hydra shop and told them what it was for Pressure,heat and service rating needed . $55 later for all and I will never revisit it in my life time .

Thanks guys! I check our local shops. I’ll update this when I have some new info. It might be a bit, springtime always leaves me with a lot of irons in the fire!

If the 648 steer cylinder is like the 6018 then when you rebuild it, replace the nut on the end of the rod that holds the piston assy together in the cylinder. There have been many of use with that nut coming loose and causing possible cylinder damage. This had happened to mine. Nut loosened up and cup seals ripped apart.
