So had the Case 224 out. Cleaned the grass, oh oh , I mean the driveway. Hehehehe. Any way, worked good, belt stayed on. Case throwers don’t seem to throw as far as my other ones, but gets rid of the snow. Might throw better with more snow. Today’s was light, fluffy and not deep.

The snow casters if set up properly and full throttle will throw quite far . There are a few tips and hints the boys have shared on the sites .
1 Make sure auger is a close as can be to housing with out rubbing . Rubber wiper on center thrower paddles helps .
2 Adjust chain tension by replacing chain if any wear in it . #40 chain under $25 for 10' at PA. If more adjustment is needed add idler or slot drive sprocket mounting hole and tensioner bolt.
3 Some have gone to the point of increasing the auger RPM by increasing the number of teeth in drive gear a couple of teeth.
Other than smooth non stick surfaces , these are the top three in my mind .

Minor correction to #3. Increase the # of teeth on the small sprocket. If memory is correct the OEM sprocket is 17 teeth, the mod is to replace it with a 19 tooth sprocket taking the auger from around 1,700 rpm's up to about 1,900. Going smaller than 17, means it has to turn more times per revolution of the auger = slower auger speed.

Some me included also think that the chute has too sharpe of a bend in it, and limits the throwing distance. The only time I use the top deflector is when blowing into the wind. My Simplicity has a much straighter chute, and will throw almost 2x as far as the case caster. Here are a couple links from the old site for some caster mods.

@Propane57 or what it's worth, I was not impressed by the Case snowcaster when I first used it. My Chinese 2-stage walk behind snowblower throws a lot farther. But when I said this on the other forum people pointed out to me that it must be incorrectly setup, and that's why it sucks. At the time the caster was on a 246, and I think the clutch and belt weren't right. Then I put it on a 446, which had lots of power, and I made sure that belt and clutch were tight. It was better than before, but still could not throw far, and at times the chute was getting clogged. The snowcaster was just the way I got it from the PO. That caster will get new bearings, all around, and new chain, and there's a thread I started on that, will update it as things get done. I'm waiting to see what @DavidBarkey does for a chain tensioner, because the way you tension the chain now is by moving the auger away from the housing, and that's not helping with pushing wet heavy snow.

Auger speed is really important, so I really want to make that change to the sprocket.

Well I need more snow to try it again. And that could be Friday. They, are saying 15 cm.
One thing about snow throwers and it doesn’t matter what brand. They will throw farther straight ahead than to 90 degree left or right. Because the snow has to change direction of 90 degrees and that slows it down. Any longer curved chute will work better too. Because it less resistance. I’m not sure what to think about the chute opening. It’s 8” I think and most garden tractor blower or throwers the opening is 6”. I’ve never had any luck the the rubber paddle trick. Didn’t seem to make any difference. If you speed up the auger or impeller, in a blower, you better have lots of horse power to operate in in heavy snow conditions. If not, the engine will labour and begin to lose revs, which equals shorter throwing distance, which means you have to slow down or stop for the engine to speed back up. Think about a car rear differential gears, say a 3:08 ratio compared to a 4:10 ratio. We know how that works. I have on my Ford snowblower slowed the impeller speed down. Still had about the same throwing distance, but the engine never lost rpm in the heavy stuff and I could keep a constant tractor speed. Worked great.
And a comparison, I have a John Deere # 49 snow thrower on my JD 140H3. It is basically the same as a snocaster. It’s 46” wide, but the chute opening is 6”. There is no adjustment to bring the auger closer to the bucket housing that I know of.
Any way it works pretty good. Sorry about the long winded post. Just some thoughts.

Thought of some thing else. I use tremclad clear gloss paint on my snow throwers or blowers. I have very little or no chute plugging troubles. I coat every thing, bucket, auger and chute. I also use this on my snow plows and shovels. Spray them at the first of the season then maybe spray them again mid season. Been using that for years, works good.
I have not done the Case 224 snocaster yet with the Tremcald paint.

Great idea Noel , I am going to try that with the one I am rebuilding . Along with straighter chute , new bearings and chain , Plastic tube for gravel driveways, 19 tooth sprocket , adjustable chain slides and spray blocker . And all the mods the other have come up with .

Just need to finish the 446 to put it on first.
