1969 Case 222 PK (aka Crusty)

Post by RoamingGnome »

Hooked the trailer on the back of the Tacoma this morning and took :wife: for a nice relaxing drive along the shore of Lake Erie...
It was good to get out of the city for a while and catch the breeze coming off the lake.

There is a lot of bits there... more than enough to make an interesting jigsaw puzzle for cold winter nights.
I'll slowly gather more of what's missing and eventually do a proper restoration. - It will eventually make a nice companion for my '68 Case 195 (aka Grandpa)

The good - it has a pretty straight hood and tower. The frame seems in good shape and it also has the mower deck lift cylinder and valve
- and as a real bonus - the fuel tank looks really nice and shiny inside :letmesee:
The bad - it's missing almost everything else - engine, pump, hyd cooler, the sector gear for the steering and obviously... no wheels
First I'll try to find some wheels for it, so at least then I can roll it around and start making a real list of all the other missing bits... :congrats:

And as for the nickname - lots of lichen growing over everything :106: - It definitely looks 'crusty' :D

Thanks again to @Chad for posting the FB Marketplace listing

You are SO right @Harry Friends make all the difference in the world

@DavidBarkey I will definitely talk to you about parts when :writing: a list and it has been double/triple checked.

This is definitely a low priority project for the moment. I really need another tractor project like I need a hole in my head right now... :114:

First thing though - I need to get it off my trailer, and it would be nice to put some wheels on it... When I have the time to go up to the 'Roost and look in my 'Garage Container' there is a mid 70's 220 parts frame inside - good chance then to see what I can salvage from that and then decide about scrapping the really rough bits - before I go shopping for more parts... I'll definitely share more stories and photos of my progress as things move along...

More progress on 'Crusty' today - :snail:
- off road engine hoist to the rescue, took the trailer tailgate off and backed the hoist right up against the back of the trailer.

- I was pleased with myself that I still have the knack for eyeballing centre of gravity for irregularly shaped loads and was only off an inch or so on my first test pick...

After Crusty was hanging in the breeze all I had to do was push the trailer out from underneath and then lower the 222 onto some decking laid across the lower legs of the hoist
- used cautiously the hoist can also function as a pick-n-carry - (really needs some beefier wheels/tires on the front though  )

Next step was to see what I could find to use for wheels on Crusty... I recently changed front tires/rims on my yellow 644 loader, and still had the old front wheel assemblies kicking around in my piles of junk - they are the right bolt pattern for the rear axle - but the 222 uses smaller diameter bolts... (it's good enough for now :giggle: )

On to the front end - found the axle pivot pin is missing :headbash: previous owner in the distant past had pushed a chunk of 1" square tube in the hole so the axle stayed in place - pretty sure I have a spare axle and pivot pin in the container up at the property - Cleaned the rust and crud off the front spindles and found I some spare hand cart / wagon wheels with the right bearing size ;)
- and of course the drag link is also missing- so back into the piles of misc junk I might need someday and found that a transmission support for the Suzuki Samurai that is almost exactly the right size - length really isn't that critical right now, :)) what with the missing steering sector gear and the rest of the linkage - at least for now the front tires 'sort of' point in the same direction (most of the time...) :))

Don't snicker too much - I only wanted to be able to roll it around in the backyard - but honestly with those silly sized wheels Crusty looks like he is ready for a pass down the drag strip... :109:
