How did you get interested in Case Tractors

For me I needed a GT mostly to cut grass. My previous LT was kept mowing for years and I was tired of fixing it. A co-worker mentioned to me he had a machine that he would drop off to try it out. It ended up being a 446 with a mowing deck and snowblower. It ran fine for years until it didn’t and not having time to look at it I parked it and purchased a CC LT for mowing my grass, which I still use today. A few years pass the kids married off and I had time on my hands to dive into the 446. I was not to familiar with Onan engines so I got on a GT site found Boomers contact info and with a few phone calls and purchasing some parts the old Onan was back up and running better than ever, as it still is today. That’s my story and other members please chime in with their first Case GT story.

For me , we bought 2 acres in rural Ont. . Hadn't owned anything bigger than a WB . I wanted a small tractor that I could cut grass , move snow, start a garden and pull a trailer . After getting a Bolen large frame that didn't do all that I wanted I saw add in kijiji for a Case 446 and accessories . But it was not running and in pieces . But the price seemed right at for all I was getting . Tractor with bigg wheels on it , tiller, mower deck , trailer (generic) bagger set up , rear blade , Snow blower (caster), Brinley harrow , 3 point hitch , snow chains , . All for $1200 about 12 years ago . This was the birth of Frankie (Frankenstein ). After getting it running and working around the property . Needs changed and so did the tractor . After a few remodels , frame lengthen , loader , cab, gauges , and creature comforts , Frankie is what you see today . During that time I have restored and sold a 222 , built another 446 (Blower project tractor with genny engine ) another 200 series collection of parts to do one day And the infomus Bride of Frankenstein I will finish one day . Maybe this winter .

When I got into garden tractors, was very interested in them and my son was too. So I’d be looking at garden tractor pictures. So not knowing much about Case tractors, I saw a picture of a big wheel Case tractor and thought, just like a farm tractor but smaller. So then I always wanted one. And I wanted to put the farm tractor tires on it to make it look even more like a farm tractor. I wanted it for parades, displays and events. So after 15 or so years, I finally got one and that’s what you see in my posts. 1982 Case 446.

That was a nice story Noel, especially how you included your son. When I got my 446 my son would mow my lawn with it when I was to busy at work. He was never to excited about it though. Thanks for sharing your story.

In about 2009, I had an old Cub Cadet 120-something with a clapped out Kohler 10 or 12 hp. It had such blowby that I had to add oil every single mowing. So I tore that engine down in the fall, thinking I'd get it bored and rebuilt by spring. But I got way over my head, not least because I failed to find a machine shop. (Today, I'd bore it myself, but that was way before I had that capability)
Next spring I needed a mower, and started searching for a better cub cadet. On a Sunday evening about 8 pm I found on Craiglist a 1973 442 with blade and deck. $475. I had never heard of Case's before, but a little research showed me that they were solid, USA built machines. I was already sold on the Kohler K301, and I absolutely loved the high wheels. And a blade to boot.
I called the number and the guy, who was about an hour away from me, said someone is coming in the morning, he'd call me back. I asked could I come tonight. He acted like I must be insane, but if I was willing, so was he. So by 10 pm I had it loaded on the trailer. My son still mows his place with that machine every week. It's had fluid changes, and got upgraded to a holding valve. A couple new belts and batteries. But still going strong.
I later lucked into a 4020PS for $600. Some lawncare guy had it given to him, and the PS hoses were leaking. He didn't know much about them, just wanted a quick buck. I was happy to oblige.
You all know the rest: I've since added a 3 pt hitch, 3pt forks, back blade, vac trailer, and then added a removable loader with quick attach bucket and forks.
Now I can't imagine not having that amazing machine available to me. I use it in a million ways all the time.

One of the first jobs I had when I got out of high school (early 60's) was selling lawn & garden equipment for Sears so I was exposed to the Colt tractors as a competitor early on. My father and older brother had Case farm tractors so I also had experience with them. When we built our current home I needed a lawn tractor so I bought my 446 new in 1978. It is still going today with minimal repairs.

After a couple of years of doing everything by hand at our little cottage, I finally convinced myself to get a mower tractor. There was an ad for an Allis Chalmers with deck and snow caster for 1700 and I told the guy I'm buying it but won't be able to come get it until the weekend, and he said that's fine. What do you know, next day the tractor was gone. Oh boy, was I upset for a few days. Maybe two weeks later a Case 220 package with attachments came up on the market and I went and got it from near Niagara Falls. That's how it started. Many Case tractors and attachments were chased and bought, because I liked them a lot and still do. I'm so glad that Allis Chalmers didn't come my way, I'd have most likely not find the Case garden tractors if that didn't happen.

When I was a kid my friend had a 444. It was fast in high range and we would do backward burn-out's by going full speed forward and slamming into reverse (poor tractor). 15-20 years later, in the 90's I sold my house in town and bought in the country. Just over 1-1/2 acres. My same friend, at same time, inherited 35 acres complete with lawn equipment from his father-in-law. I was there when he found an Ariens RER was propped up against the wall. We pulled it down and it was seized. My friend said "do you want it", I said "sure". After bringing it home and contemplating a few days whether to fix or replace engine, I gave it another pull and it wasn't seized any more. 15 minutes later, I was cutting the lawn with it. It worked fine, but only had 30" cut. While at an auction I saw and bid on a JD one hundred something (110, 120, 130, don't know). It was 38" cut and had 4 gears and vari-drive. It was SLOWER than the RER. I determined it was the shifting forward to reverse that was the problem. Then, the same friend had an auction to sell off his unwanted in-laws stuff and I sold JD. I went to another auction and saw a 448; I remembered how you go from forward to reverse in an instant, so was determined to win bidding. I still have it, but cut the lawn with my Walker.

Harry, my favourites are 444 and 644. I like the Kohler k321 engine, when in good shape it has plenty of power for my needs and it's easy and cheap to rebuild.

No ... that is one of the few thing I have managed to avoid. I still check all the for sale ads for Case but don't ever go beyond that.

My interest began when I was around 4 or so - Dad's 155 with a custom loader was parked in a corner collecting dust and I remember sitting on it pretending to drive. I liked that it seemed kid size compared to the big machines around my uncle's and grandfather's place. I don't know why it was parked not running for so long but when I was 12 or so I said "dad l it's time to get it going!" Inspiration came from seeing another old case in my uncle's barn, I didn't know it at the time but I now know it was a T-90. Not sure where it is now.
So we got it running finally after a rebuild - dad took the block to work and had it bored and put in a sleeve (was bored .30 over at the time). I distinctly remember how frustrating it was trying to get it going after all of the work we had put in - turn out 2 wires were switched (manual diagram error!) Once it was running was always driving around, mowing and loader work. A few years later my parents split and it ended up at my grandfather's place for 20+ years, outdoors under a tarp and tree. 3 years ago my grandfather passed (he was the reason we got the machine as he convinced his then young son-in-law aka my dad to buy it) and I rescued the tractor, loader and mower. All are in my garage awaiting a refresh and possible restoration.
When we moved to our current property I was using a clapped out John Deere 68 mower, and when it finally died I saw an ad for a 444 with mower and blade. I remembered the fun with our 155 and I made a deal with the gentleman who took my 68 on trade with some cash. It's been my main machine since, and I've picked up some more attachments (another dozer blade, dump cart) and another 444 and 155.
My little guy (3 yrs) is obsessed with tractors and construction equipment and I look forward to seeing him and his older sisters driving our Case fleet as they grow. Of course they all need work but that will be the fun part
P.S. really enjoying this thread!

A few years ago, we sold our house in the suburbs of Ottawa to purchase a hobby farm. The property needed some work but we bought it for the potential, I knew nothing about tractors and needed something to clear some of the fields and it needed to have a loader strong enough to lift 8 feet latge square hay bales. I ended up buying a Kubota L2501, which was the most affordable tractor I could get with about half a dozen implements to get me started.
As the projects were getting done, I was looking for a smaller tractor to go between paddocks and around the property. I stumbled on a 446 ad on Kijiji not too far from me. I had never heard of or seen such a cool looking tractor!! I was intrigued by the big wheels. It was posted here as well a few years ago:
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=454
I started to research and watched pretty much all the case or ingersoll related videos on youtube and thought these were the greatest small tractor ever! By the time I reached out to the owner, this one was sold. I ended up buying a 4016 about a year later.

Growing up, my parents neighbor had a 3012 with hydravac and snowcaster. Did a great job mowing and it moved a lot of snow for us. One summer we put the chains on it and got to work clearing his side yard. We pulled out small trees and pulled logs with it. Great tractor. When it came time to buy my own tractor I knew what to buy. I bought my 4016 vanguard in the Poughkeepsie NY area and hauled it home in a uhaul. Tractor had 55hrs on it and came with a snowcaster, cab, weights and chains. On the way home I stopped in Warwick RI and bought another SB48 snowcaster and RM44 deck. The 2nd snowcaster got sold and I used the RM44 for mowing duties. The following year I bought a RM48 deck for $50. That's about what it was worth. The deck housing had 7 broken welds which were fixed and bracing welded in. The deck also got all new spindle housings, spindles, idler, all hardware replaced and the mule drive was rebuilt. The following year I bought a weight box and the 3012 from above. I kept the rear PTO and hydravac. Kind of wish I kept the rest. Another year or so passed and I bought my Berco snowblower. See a pattern here

I took a few years off the buying and we had two kids. This year I bought the Johnny Bucket but the mule drive part hasn't happened yet. TBD what I'm going to do with that. Still on the lookout for a higher HP tractor. The 4016 gets the job done but the power just doesn't meet expectations. Got a little carried away there rambling

@Harry Great topic, I’m enjoying reading everyone’s stories. My journey into the Case GT world is pretty well documented here so I won’t repeat all that. But I will add this. Even though I grew up in an agricultural area I really never saw many GT tractors around. A couple of people had the John Deere version but nothing that really ever caught my attention. However there was a fellow a few towns over that had a Case 444 that I was always drawn to. Every time I was over there I had to go take a look at it. Thinking back now I think that planted the seed in my head. When a came upon the 648 there wasn’t any question of weather or not I was going to bring it home!

The 16hp vanguard can't climb the small hill in my front yard with the deck running cutting grass without the rpms quickly dropping off. Even slowing to a slow crawl can drop the rpms into the 3000rpm range. Just running the deck up hill over the already cut grass causes the rpms to drop but not as bad. I can cut down a good 6" of thick grass around my house at a slow walking pace at 3400-3500 rpms. It gets the job done and certainly works hard. I do agree with Ingersoll dropping the 16hp vanguard from the lineup with later model tractors.
Swapping in a higher hp vanguard gets expensive if you want to go beyond 18HP. The 18HP engine can reuse the muffler and clutch. The 21HP and 23HP vanguards require the muffler, electric clutch, raising the hood and due to the new style flywheel, a custom stub shaft setup to connect the hydraulic pump. The vanguard frames also have raised up engine mounts due to the lower crankshaft height in the block. Onan and kohler command crankshafts are both higher. In my opinion it's more cost effective to buy a higher HP tractor. I just haven't found an Ingersoll to buy.

The biggest issue Matt has is that the "16hp" briggs does not have the same power as the 16hp onan . For two reasons , gross verses brake net and torque is grater with the Onan due to larger
ci.
@MattA You might want to look into one of these Kohlers . extended crank shaft fly wheel side and available in 20-24 hp . A 20hp wood give you ample power.

never heard of case gt,i was at work when a fellow showed up with a 224 with caster he wanted 300 bucks for it no one wanted it at work so i told him i would buy if he could deliver it that nite at my house,it smoked pretty bad needed a set of rings, but everytime i used that caster i felt blessed to have it,i have a long driveway and we get some pretty heavy snowfall this was back in 1998,since then i added another 224 a 444 a 446 and my favorite a 226 that has that same caster on it,i acquired a lot of attachments since then thinking its good to have a back-up for everything we use funny thing is the back up attachments are still stored in same spots as 10 -15 years ago and that rebuilt 224 that i first bought has not been worked in at least that long but it is all ways ready too.

David that looks very similar to the kohler commands. Years ago I looked into the Kohler command swap. Issues were the higher crankshaft, clearance to the hood and the length of the engine. I think the engine was several inches longer. It's been done, I have pictures of a case 200 series with a 25HP Kohler command.

never heard of case gt,i was at work when a fellow showed up with a 224 with caster he wanted 300 bucks for it no one wanted it at work so i told him i would buy if he could deliver it that nite at my house,it smoked pretty bad needed a set of rings, but everytime i used that caster i felt blessed to have it,i have a long driveway and we get some pretty heavy snowfall this was back in 1998,since then i added another 224 a 444 a 446 and my favorite a 226 that has that same caster on it,i acquired a lot of attachments since then thinking its good to have a back-up for everything we use funny thing is the back up attachments are still stored in same spots as 10 -15 years ago and that rebuilt 224 that i first bought has not been worked in at least that long but it is all ways ready too.
You have a few GT’s extra for back up. I can appreciate that, I’m the same way. Great story theotherhalf.

Our Massey 2616H was purchased used from a lawn care business and had high hours on it. When the motor gave out, a replacement was considered. Our drive way is 150 feet of gravel so it wasn't a surprise to find 2 massive holes in the snow thrower scroll. There was about a foot of snow in the drive and moreon the way. Procrastination was not an option.
A 444 with deck and caster was advertised about about 15 minutes away, and seemed to be priced correctly. It opened our drve like a champ, making the massey seem like child play.
Within a few days of the purchase, I started down a rabbit hole. and lust for a fully dressed 448 began. If only lust stopped there.

Spike, I can see you have many CCI GT’s. Down the rabbit hole is a good description for an addiction. I have five and don’t feel like I’ve been sucked down the hole, but a nice 448 is enticing. Thanks for adding to the thread.

Harry. Oops: I Iied, I just looked at the bottom of my post. I had forgotten about the 226. Maybe I am starting to slip down the rabbit hole, but still hanging on by one hand.

This photo is maybe 10 years ago. There are twice that many now.
