Mule drive compatibility

Post by Eugen »

Quick question for the group. Do mule drives from the 200 series fit the 400 series? I want to build a front weight bracket for my 446 and wonder if I come across a 200 series if I should get it.

I don't believe there's a difference. Even if there was, the physical attachment is the same, and you just want a weight bracket, so you should be good.

That's great, thank you!

So, anyone around Toronto and area if you have a mule drive for sale please let me know!

Here is what I did. It was built to hold 3 of the JD 40# suitcase weights. This was a mower mule, note the blue pipe. It was needed because the arms are flimsy and would flex and fall off the lower pins. Flat or angle iron could have worked but you can see the slots are really worn so I chose pipe. I cut a tee in each end of the pipe and opened it up, then put some flat stock in the pipe .015" larger than the pins and beat the pipe ends down. The top holes are worn also, so I welded a couple washers on them. Both the pipe and washers took care of the worn holes and widened the contact area on the pins to take out some of the play due to worn pins. I have had it on a 224, 448, and 3012.

That's great Gordy! I want to make something like this myself. When I get my hands on a mule drive I'll post my adventure.

When you get a mule, put it on the tractor and set you weights on blocks in front of it, then open the hood and adjust the blocks so the hood will open without hitting the weights. Then mark the mule for where you want to weld the brackets. I have seen some weight mounts built to hold 4 of these weights, and not interfere with the front tires when turning. I should mention that Case weights and mounts do show up on eBay from time to time, but OMG expensive  Here are a couple more pics.

Those look like nice weights! Good idea regarding the clearance to front tires and clearance from the ground, I will do that!

Real Case weights seem really rare around here and getting them from ebay would kill me on shipping. Luckily I have some weights already, which I got from a local farmer.

Looky looky, it's 20 Kg/44 lbs each. Probably from a Russian tractor

If you are referring to the JD weights, Thanks. Notice in the one picture the Deer appears to be running away from the Case 8-) I do catch some grief for having them on the case, by other Case owners. But, I tell them I like JD they are great at making DEAD weight

Cheers,
