I have a 6018 backhoe. Still wondering how an oil change would fix no high gear. Is the transaxle shift lever not attached tocthr rear axle.

Nice machine. Sure would like to have one. But I doubt if there were even any sold here.

So I have a question. The tractor would not move in high range. But would in low range. How would the change of hydraulic system oil change that. And I realize there was water in it. Not enough pressure ? Could somebody enlighten me on that.

Probably Noel, the loader backhoes are heavy and not known to travel well in high. With water in the oil and possibly lighter oil, there was too much slip.

I think that’s right. When I checked the specs the counter weight under the tractor was 500 pounds, and the back hoe listed at 800 pounds. I would say that’s quite a bit of static weight hanging on a tractor of that size. Plus the oil I drained out felt like pure water, no viscosity. I’m not a hydraulic expert by any means but the way I understand it the pump will move the liquid through the system, but with that much water in it the system can’t build enough pressure to move that much weight in high gear. The rest of the hydraulic functions worked because they didn’t require as much pressure to operate.

I hope that makes sense. Maybe someone can explain it better.

I should also add that this might also indicate that the pump or drive motor may be weak. With that much water in the system they couldn’t operate as they should. But I don’t think we’ll really know till we put it to work. I don’t have gauges to test pressure.

Hydraulics , there is always some leek past in pumps and motors . The thinner the fluid ,the more leeks past the less power the is being put to the wheels . High gear needs more torque to more at a higher rate of speed due to lose of mechanical advantage over low gear .
That being said ,when you said water in the oil . Do you mean watery as in thin viscosity or milky as in oil water mixed ?

Dave,

It was like oil and water mixed together, very milky. When I rubbed it between my fingers it felt like water. When I drained the system it came out look like chocolate milk. Here’s a picture of the first flush we did.

. I refilled the machine and ran the hydraulics through their full range several time over a couple of days, then drained it again. This time it was still milky but not near as bad. I refilled it and now it looks good, not milky at all, and no foam in the tank.

It will take some time to get it all out of the system, unless you drain all the hydraulic cylinders, it will linger in the system.

I had a few people tell me about this site. When I came over and checked it out it really seemed like a better place to have the 648. I could see there were good people here with a lot more knowledge on these tractors than I have. And your one of them! I was wondering if you were over here. Glad you are!
