Engine rebuild or swap
Engine rebuild or swap
I am currently rebuilding my case 446 with a onan b43m. The engine is smoking and I would like to get it rebuilt. Looking for a machine shop near me (eastern Ontario ) that would do that. I do have the option of putting in a rebuilt kohler magnum m18 that I have . The issue with that is I need the hydraulic pump bracket and a clutch hub to fit the kohler. Would the parts off a kohler k321 fit. Looking for advice which way to go and where to buy parts if I go ahead and use the magnum m18
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Engine rebuild or swap
The guy that runs enginebore.com is located in Mississauga and he has done rebuild work at least for me and @Spike188 . I know that Boomer is the preferred, maybe only source of Onan quality parts for rebuilds. I'll send you his contact info in a private message.
As for an engine rebuild shop near you, that I wouldn't know.

Re: Engine rebuild or swap
Mike at enginebore.com is great to work with. He is getting set up to handle onan twins and has done some Onan valve work for me. Boomer is a wealth of information on Onan. Onan engines are pricey to rebuild, north of $2 grand Canadian if pistons, rods, and valves are needed. The uptick is these engines will last 2000 hours or more if properly carred for. A big killer on Onan engines is missing engine tin, oil filter air seal, and running low on oil.
I am currently doing a ground up restore on a 646 backhoe. That engine was missing a lot of parts, broken timing cover, missing point box, air filter hardware, and .....
Currently I am back logged with customer work so probably will not get back at it this winter. I just came in from the shop after taking a tool grinding roller apart. A set of 4 bearing NSK 7204CLDUP3 list at almost $700cd. These parts make CCI parts look cheep

Re: Engine rebuild or swap
We have few members running the bigger Kohlers. Hope they can chip in on the possibility of adapting it to the 446.

Re: Engine rebuild or swap
Kevin , do you know for sure that it needs a rebuild ? Have you done a compression test ? I have a P220 Onan In Frankie that smoked when first got it . It turned out to be a broken pcv read valve spring . After a few gaskets , spring and the proper oil in it . It no longer smokes . Nothing wrong with the M18 if it is the one with oil filter but fixing the Onan might be easier and cheaper depending on what it actually needs . What are you running for oil in it ?Cookie wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 7:58 pm I am currently rebuilding my case 446 with a onan b43m. The engine is smoking and I would like to get it rebuilt. Re: Engine rebuild or swap
Boomer has stopped doing rebuilds for years. He is THE source for new and used parts and parts advice.Eugen wrote: ↑Tue Jan 04, 2022 8:19 pm The guy that runs enginebore.com is located in Mississauga and he has done rebuild work at least for me and @Spike188 . As for an engine rebuild shop near you, that I wouldn't know.![]()
http://boomersonanparts.com/
Download This John Deer enhanced manual.
https://www.gardentractortalk.com/threa ... 260.88333/
Do not print the whole manual. The manual covers many Onan engine models for each section. Carefully make sure you are only looking at the pages for your model.
Follow the manual for disassembly. Take your block to the machine shop and your valves if you want them re-faced. The machine shop will tell you hopefully that you can hone your block less that 0.005 over. If they do then you can reuse your pistons and just get new rings.
You may need to make or buy some tools. If you have an Onan Engine Overhaul Tool Kit, I hate you. Unless you sell it to me. The engine shop will most likely help with new bearings if needed and maybe take care of the valves. Cam bearings are often out of spec.
If it is worn over the 0.005 you are at a crossroads. Find a better block $100ish often. Or pay for the boring and buy new expensive pistons with rings at about a $600 difference. I have never gone with the bore job and the only way I ever would is if the customer requested it, just because of the costs. Boomer may even have good used blocks.
Onan's are a different engine from all others that Case Ingersoll used. So, do not apply this to all small engines. There is not an engine overhaul kit except for those resellers that bulk buy garbage and sell it cheap all over the internet. If you go to an engine parts-only reseller, they will not have Onan kits. The reason for that is many items can still be reused. Each overhaul is different.
None of this boring advice applies to the Kohler engines. They all must be bored, 100% must. The machine shop will tell you what size you need or sell one to you and then custom-fit the piston. The cranks are often out of round as well. By often I mean that they most likely are.

Re: Engine rebuild or swap
I did a compression test and both cylinders are about 75 psi. The spark plug wires off the coil are melted , so it looks like the engine has run hot or very lean. I don’t know the history of this engine . All the tins are in place . I will check the read valve tonight.DavidBarkey wrote: ↑Wed Jan 05, 2022 8:16 amKevin , do you know for sure that it needs a rebuild ? Have you done a compression test ?
