I got some more apart for clean up and repairs , and found this under the grime .
Looks like high nickle rod on the top .
Note, the solid pin welded in place and the plate steel on the bottom of the axle
pin welded on the back side too
I can't imagine what it took to brake this axle like that . There is no signs of a loader ever being on it or any other damage . Just typical wear in the steering system I have to fix . Thoughts ????
ho wow! Dave, the front spindles would have given up way before the axle, if it was damage from a loader. Most likely hitting a stationary object, I think. Or falling off some height. Impact of that type is a serious danger to cast iron parts.
Looks pretty well done, the fix though. You intend this tractor to be on snowcaster duty, right? Probably the fix would hold just fine for that, but it might bother you just knowing it's there, and not knowing how well it was fixed. If I were you and had another axle on hand I'd replace this one, just for piece of mind. My 2c

Ya snowblower / plow blade and ya the spindles are good , there was a little twist on the right side that they all seam to have I have already fixed . The weld is on the left at the top. It is a good thing the axles are Cast steel and not cast iron . I hoping it will be ok as I don't have another 4 series front axle . I put that one on the BOF. Plus cutting that pin out with out butchering the frame would be a job and a half . If it come down to it I can make a new one .

Bent and twisted I have seen and fixed , pins ect. But to break the front axle . Holy cow, I had the back wheels off the ground with Frankie using the loader before I put the Super Duty front axle in and didn't even bend it and the thing weighs in 2314 lbs with me in it . That a lot of force on the front axle . Boggles my mind . I must be missing something .
well Dave, as much as it would be very interesting to know how it was broken, I guess just rub some dirt on it and durability test it. See what kind of a weld job the PO did.
A previous owner of a 4120PS snapped the spindle off at the inside bearing. His method of destruction was leave the tractor sitting in a low spot where water ponded. When winter set in and the pond was frozen. he decided to sell the neglected toy so with a 4 X 4 and chain the 4120 was towed to the front yard, leaving one front wheel and spindle in the ice cube. He waited until spring thaw before adding the wheel and spindle to the pile of 4120 parts for sale.

Ya , I think when I have more of it stripped down I will do a static load test with 4 ton porta power. If it is good , great . If it breaks I will know where I stand .
