motor swap
hi all, I started on fixing a case 222 about a year ago and life got in the way, I'm thinking about getting back to it if I can and was wondering if swapping a diesel engine in it would work, one like this https://www.amazon.ca/DUIBAII-Diesel-En ... 174&sr=8-5. bad idea?

The engine is 6.3 kw. That is 9 hp. Considerably less than the stock Kohler engine that it came with. I wonder what the torque writing is on the diesel compared to the Kohler.

@knappett If you are just powering the tractor it is enough . If you want to use it to mow grass you need at least a 12 hp . Understand that these little diesel are not like the bigger diesels in compression ratios . In order to run up to 3600 rpm the compression is lower . So the torque ratings are lower as well more like a gas engine of the same HP . They will use less fuel than a gas unit of the same HP . The old nail head engines had larger cubic inches relative to the HP rating compared to the newer overhead valve engines with high compression ratios .
So this brings up the question of why re-power . Is the engine not rebuildable ? If so and you want a more modern engine . Understand that you will need a new adaptor bracket for the pump and possibly a new pump/ hoses . All of which is available at PA in Barrie . To drive the pto clutch of the front , you will need a new stub shaft machined up assuming the engine chosen is machined to take one . Again doable . You are not that far from me . Drop in one day .

oh ya I definitely want to use a cutting deck. I was just thinking a diesel would be kinda cool. the motor in it is pretty pooched, it's already bored 30 over and is still sloppy, I'm assuming the valve guides and everything else are worse out as well, I see enginebore.com can pretty much do a whole motor rebuild, but at that point I could practically buy a different tractor.....

Add a 1" L-095 lovejoy connector and new spider
I would need to see it , but you should be able to hook up your pump housing with a simple adaptor plate . Then it is down to machining a new stub shaft for the pto clutch .
