lexan window polishing

Post by DavidBarkey »

Lexan is great and easy to work with , But does haze over from UV damages and dirt scratches . Every so often it need a water sanding and polishing . I had left it too long so had to get down to 600 grit wet to start , then 1500 - 2000 - 3000- and then polish with plastics polish meant for head lights . Sorry I forgot to take a before pic. , but you get the point .

Nicely done Dave! I'm going to have to wander by your place sometime and get some measurements of your cab...
- For when we are finally up north at the 'Roost and have to deal with 'real' winter :))
Last few years snow accumulation in Hamilton has been very lame

That looks great!
Having spent I can't even imagine how many hours cleaning and polishing acrylic, and polycarb, I have developed a true hatred for either substance...
The sand and polish will do the job for sure.

TO keep that to a minimum, or at least extend your interval...

Never, and I mean never use paper towels. They have a high percentage of recycled fiber content, and when they recycle all that paper, the staples get included... Not an issue for most of life, but it will scratch your plastic. I have found the best choice of material to be new cotton cheesecloth. I buy it at Home Depot in the paint area.

Don't use something like Windex, or glass cleaner. There are cleaners for plastic that don't damage the surface. I'm not usually fond of an expensive name brand, but for clear plastics, I am. I use exclusively a product named Plexus. It's a cleaner/polish, and while absurdly expensive, it actually does what it claims. No I don't own stock, or work for the company. I hate having to buy it, and it's hard to find most of the time. I found it when I was dealing with big corporation scenery. Money was no object for them, so I was able to try anything I could get my hands on. Their website looks like it's right out of the 90's... https://www.plexusplasticcleaner.com/about.html

When I decided to buy a UTV with a cab, I specifically looked at units with glass windshields. I ended up with glass all around, but I wouldn't have even looked at plastic up front...

@Toolslinger Back in my racing days we used Pledge furniture polish. I did work well . Now I use the plastic polish for headlights . Biggest problem is I left it too long between cleanings and of course the wiper blade . The new blower tractor has tempered glass front and back . I plan is to eventually do the same with Frankie , but too many other rods in the fire right now . I am going to lock up the stuff . It is always good to have other options .

Never thought to try Pledge. I imagine that probably beaded water nicely...
