646 Lovejoy replacement.

Post by Spike188 »

@Harry you just had a hydraulic pump issue on the green tractor. We'll, now I do, and it was self created. #$@!!! The last photo in building a bigger toybox was a photo of the 646 with the rear mount hydraulic driven snow blower. Yesterday, when plugging in the hydraulic hoses, one was under pressure. The engine was running at near full throttle when I shifted the pto lever to release the back pressure on the jammed hose connection. Shifting the pto lever released the pressure and the line attached. Great
The blower had been stored outdoors so there was a sense of urgency to see and hear it run. Shifting the pto from neutral to forward and reverse should have made the auger turn. Nothing happened, not even a groan. Next the loader raise was tried and it was very very sluggish then stopped moving. The tractor wouldn't move either. A sense of dred and fear began to creep and settle in. I knew better than turning on the pto without a loop or piece of equipment attached.

Not only did it shear the key, but the deadheading pressure split the Lovejoy coupling on the pump shaft.

Tomorrow snowing, wind, and another below freezing day. 26f/-5c. Every indoor workspace is packed full with the new accessory building taking priority. If Eugen can rebuild an in a tent, then I can do this. The motor will be moved forward and the coupling will be changed out.

Oh that sucks !! Working on any machine outside in this weather is no fun . It might be worth while to take a few 2x4s and some vapour barrier and build a quicky tent over it . It is amasing how getting out of even just a brease will warm things up enough to work on . Hope it doent fight you to much .

That’s a great idea Dave. Out of the wind is a big help. Like being in a tractor cab.

The pic in the post looks like it’s in order! Is this a pic before the incident? I wish you luck in getting this fixed. Never a good thing working out in the weather. :43: :peace: Harry

@Harry It is hard to see in the photo but the hub is split along the keyway and at about 7:30.
At the top of the hub is the set screw and a split can be seen about 2/3 of the way down.

Not going to be fun fixing it outside but I know you’ll get it going. Try and stay warm.

On positive note the lovejoy connector being sintered metal failed instead of twisting the pump shaft off .

I hate to admit giving into the idea of farming this job out. 27f/-5c, windy and snow flurries.

It will get winchhed onto a trailer and taken to a freinds shop for repair. I may or may not have time to help. At least good record keeping in June of 2017 indicated the sizing on a replacement pump installed allows for picking up the Lovejoy replacement before teardown. It can be a Saturday job that way.

I sure don’t blame you. Having it in a shop or crawling around in the snow and cold? I think I know which one I’d pick! Hopefully it back up and running quickly.
