A couple of years after moving here , I too got tired of the rock obstetricals . When around with the shovel and tractor / no back hoe . Dug out all but one . Some were the size that one . But one just kept getting bigger and bigger the more i dug around it . Eventually I was looking at a rock the size of a VW beetle . . Need it out of the way , can't cover it where it is , can't lift it out ' what to do . A neighbour came over to see what I was up too , saw this big lump of granit and said you are going to have to bury it . He showed me how to dig beside it a deeper hole and use a pressure washer with a home made wand to undermind the soil and get the thing to slide down into the deeper hole . Out of sight , out of mind and below frost so won't be pushed back up . Tolk about week all in , but now it is nothing but memmory .

Hadn't thought about that method. Knowing how the ground is here, I don't know if I would be able to dig a big enough hole to bury a VW without finding a bus sized rock...
As the backup plan if I couldn't dig it out with the 646, or hoist it out with the JD300, or if it got serious, the Bucyrus Erie H3 crane, I figured I would go to a demolition grout. Never used it, but it looks great. Drill a bunch of holes in the rock (the company will give you a rough map with a picture and some dimensions), pack those holes with a dry powder, and walk away. No explosives. It pulls in moisture I guess, expands, and shatters the rock. I'd probably have to run a time lapse, just so I'd have a record...

Very well said and I agree 100%! That is just about the perfect summation of nearly every project I do!
