sand blasting

The last couple of morning have been nice enough to do some sand blasting outside . Things like the deck for the A.C. B-112 that will not fit in the blasting cabinet and need than peeling the paint off and etching the metal with the DA . Got about half way through the deck . SLow going with a small blaster but getting there . It still way to cold for the Wett Blaster 2000 The cabinet blaster is great for the thousands of small parts there is with this tractor . You quickly realize the brilliant simplicity of the hydraulic drive in the CCI tractors when you go to do something else . CCI tractors have literally half the parts of other tractors to do the same job .

Sand blasting is quite a mystery to me, I never really looked into it, and never had the opportunity to see it, I hope you don't mind some questions. When blasting outside, I'm assuming you lose the media right? While inside in the cabinet, you can reuse most of the blasting media?

No guess! interested that tactic would be bought up at this time! Been a big advocate for sandblasting prior to painting but realize too that there are other priorities. I have over the years always had the capabilities to sand blast, but until my son decided he needed my big compressor and I ended with just a small compressor for small tool use. Long story short he got a new one and I got my main compressor back!!! This year is the year of change!!!

Yes , Right now I am useing old blasting media from the cabinet for out side blasting . After a while the grains get smaller and full of dust . making it hard to see in the cabinet . But it still works so using out side the dust blows away and the rest is left in the area . Now if you put a trap down, you can sweep it up and reuse over and over . Biggest thing is not to have any chunks moister, or yard debree get in it that will clog up the blaster . Biggest thing with any sand blasting is volume of air at pressure . That is why I use the wet blaster for the big stuff in the summer . I don't have enough available air supply .

My wet blaster do you mean one of those things you hook up to a pressure washer? Or do you mean a vapor blaster like I've seen on YouTube doing carburetors and magnesium motorcycle parts?

For media retrival, I put down a tarp with some 2x8 boards for back stops so the media can't all get blown away. I'll blast for awhile and then fold up the tarp and pour it into 5 gallon buckets with a window screen on top to stop large debris from going back.

Yes an adapter that goes on the pressure washer . But with my own modifications . They rely on the vacuum at the venture like the air type to pull the sand , but as soon as you stop once the water dribbles back and gums up the works . So I use a 5 gallon pressure pot with the air regulated down to about 30-40 psi depending on the medium . My compressor can keep up with that . This feed the sand to the nossle and the water pressure does the rest . Works great and no dust , but is harder to reclaim medium.

When I had a covered lean-to added to my building I wanted to build a sand blast room in the corner. My air compressor would have been located opposite the wall so close to air source. Well, by the time I installed shelving for organization and fit all of my equipment in it. I ran out of space so the blast room got squeezed out. My neighbor does sand blasting outside in the summer on car frames. He is suited up and wears a hood. The prevailing wind blows that dust over to my property, usually when my grandchildren are playing on a swingset. We had a discussion about it and he more or less has no courtesy for others. Some people are hard to deal with. Harry

So for me I have a number of sandblasting guns I have bought over the years (remember I'm 75! and have a few stored away now!). My go-to weapon of choice though is a Harbor Freight pressure tank sandblaster. It's always worked well with good medium (even used Lowes sand at one point!) Ah, well worked for me and only occasionally blocked when a stone blocked the jet but at perhaps 1/4 the price of normal medium prices worth the extra effort to clear. I even bought a blasting cabinet once never again!. I only sandblast outside, during the summer too. Well my son bought a ton of sandblasting media that he left behind and works great in my pressure tank so guess what my spring will be now?
