Something I didn’t know. !

Hehe, there’s a lot of things I don’t know, , but got another on of the list, I suppose. Engine oil. Gasoline engine oil or Diesel engine oil. I knew it said that on the container for which engine to put it in. But I never knew what the difference was. I just always thought diesel oil was better and better to use in a gasoline engine. I guess not. Some how my son and I got on this subject on Xmas day. The C in the API rating means combustion ignition, and S stands for spark ignition. So this information we found means, don’t use Diesel engine oil in a gasoline engine and vise versa. I don’t have any Diesel engines so don’t really know what happens when you use gasoline engine oil in a Diesel engine. Some oils are marked with a C and a S, so they can be used in either engine.

Any way, I never knew all this, but Im sure all of you do. Can you add your comments to this please.

On newer stuff I follow the manufactures recommendations, but on old stuff I’ve tried all sorts of oils. I feel like this is one of those topics that has all kinds of opinions and it ends up getting confusing to me pretty quickly! Some people say they use diesel oil in everything others say nondetergent only. In my old Farmalls I’ve used all manor of oil types and thickness and I can’t say I’ve ever noticed a difference in performance or oil consumption. Seems to me it’s more important on the old stuff to keep the oil changed regularly.

I've used diesel oil for as long as I can remember in gas engines. There are alot of gas engines that will call for a diesel oil without you realizing it. For example an cummins onan marquis 5500 gas generator calls for 15w-40 a diesel oil. Diesel oils tend to have more zinc. Couldn't tell you how many oil changes at the dealership I work for have used diesel oil on gas engines. Don't be scared. It's just oil.

I have found that the old flat heads that want sae 30 like the 15w40 deisel , but the newer OHV engines like the standard grade 5 or 10w30 depending on the temp. outside .
As for the hydralics and the rear gear boxes 15w40 deisel or UTF is my choise

Diesel oil doesn't work well in an engine that has been slushed up. Bought a 1961 Dodge with slant 6 engine. My dad was dumping Series 3 diesel in everything, new or used. This was probably in late 70's, and we needed a cheap car. Within a short while the engine blew. Pulled it apart and the sludge had broken loose and blocked the drain ports. The bottom end of the engine starved for oil.

Series 3 was a good cleaner.

I run diesel in everything in my barn, including my truck!

My Dad was a big Pennzoil fan until he bought a new 81 Ford Fairmont, the owners manual said the warranty would be voided you you used Pennzoil Apparently at that time it was a paraffin based oil prone to sludge buildup.

Like others I run diesel oil in just about everything and have not had any problems. In fact I bought a 89 Mazda MX 6 with 204k miles on it, with regular 10w-30 oil it got 350 miles to a quart of oil, switching to 15w-40 improved it to 800 miles per quart. And I put another 85k miles on it before other things started falling apart and drove it to the boneyard
