Oh I got my calculations wrong. It's not less than 50c a lb.

So steel density is 493 lbs/cubic foot.
Three of these plates is 4x1 foot, 1/2 inch thick. 6 of these plates then is one square foot, 4 inch thick. To get a cubic foot you need 3 x 6 plates, which is 18 plates. At a price of $25 per plate, that's $450. 450/493 would be 91c per lbs. Still not bad but not as good as I thought.
Although the person said take them all 15 units for 300. That's about 73c per lb. I'm sure it's more expensive at the local metal supermarket, but I'm not at the moment able to get them all. For me 4 of these plates will be enough for the odd project.
