Colt Case Ingersoll Garden Tractors

Lots of talk on tractors about what is and isn’t considered a garden tractor. Everybody has there own opinion. Which is the way it should be. Some times sub compact and compact tractors come in to discussions.
Found this Colt brochure and it clearly states the this Colt is a compact tractor. Neat.

Possibly the distinction has to do with the use of factory available attachments that could be used in a garden? This is what I'm thinking of. The moment you can have a factory hitch on which you can attach a moldboard plow or tiller, and enough power to do it, I think is makes it a garden tractor?

I tend to think of compact tractors a little bigger than our 400 series though; maybe greater than 20HP? Let the debate begin!

I always thought to be in the GT category it had to be ground engaging, not just a mower!

I agree, it must have some type of hitch system to run implements to be called a garden tractor.

Most of the stamped metal lawn tractors don't deserve to be called "tractors", they are riding lawn mowers in my opinion.

I think the big wheel CCI get into the sub-compact class with their size, horse power, and rear pto.

Correct Harry,

Typically garden tractors have ground engaging capabilities, if not they are considered lawn tractors or the later terminology, "yard tractors".

Usually garden tractors have rear wheels retained by 5 or 6 lug bolts while lawn/yard tractors are keyed to an axle shaft with one bolt in the end of the shaft to retain the wheel.
