I am totally naive with how to proceed for the season. I run a LX172 john deer last season - that's how bad I am at this! what do I need to know to keep m lawn looking good but above all my Case performing above just normal? I want to end this season knowing that Case will e my go to tractor next year! Wan to help with how this will happen?

Here is the operators manual for the J46. There are several wear points on the mule that should be looked at. The most important place are where the mule hooks over the tractor mounting pins under the front axle. The hooks hammer out over time and elongate. On mules with excessive hook wear the belt and idler spring tension gets sloppy and can not be adjusted properly. During mowing the the hook floats and hunts on the pins and causes the belt to vary from too tight to too loose. When the belt tension is out of adjustment it will either jump off or slip on the pto clutch causing premature belt failure. In most instances the belt will jump of when the deck encounters uneven terrain.
I can post pictures of worn hooks later.

It sounds like the PO took very good care of this tractor. This should make your life easier. A check over per the operators manual and I think you'll be good to go and the Deere will be watching from the side lines.

It's always good to have a back up machine. The JD will be green with envy as the Case is Rays favorite!
