Ride in the meat wagon

Had the unfortunate pleasure of riding in the back of a meat wagon yesterday afternoon . Been having headaches in the afternoon for a few days now . Thought it was just from the heat . This time it came on so bad it dropped me to the floor . Never in my life have I experienced pain like that and in the head it was debilitating . Checked hospital and released with some meds for pain and muscle relaxant . It turns out my upper back and neck muscles are to blame. I have tension headaches before but never like this. Have been trying to take it easy lately yet still stay busy but I guess I still over did it .
Take care of yourselves guys .
Dave

David, I too have discovered the link between headeches and muscle tension and also learning that stress and highblood pressure go hand in hand. Reducing coffee consumption from over a pot a day to 2 cups in the morning has cleared a lot of digestion issues.

I am still learning

that these aging bodies are like our GT's. They take maintenace and replacement parts are hard to find.
Take it easy buddy,
Spike

Sorry to hear Dave! The heat wave we've been having the last few weeks sure doesn't help either.
Hope you're doing better now!

Almost week now since my episode and feeling much better . Must say that it has been a quiet week for me . My grandson Jacob has been very helpful and I am done the meds . A combination of stress , heat, doing more than I should in the heat , not escaping the heat at night (no AC yet ) and beer in the evenings caused a flair up in my upper back /neck . That caused pressure on the back of my scull giving me the blinding headache. Now 56 I am not that "old" but I am not the invincible guy I use to be . I think this was a reminder of that from my body . Be careful guys as it was not 1 thing ,but the combination of things . I honestly though I was taking it easy enough with the heat while still getting things done . Lesson learned , well at least until I over do it the next time

. The hardest thing this week was not doing much (not much of a sitter) ,and of cloud in my head from the meds . was very unsettling .
Take easy guys

Glad to hear you're better Dave! You're by any means young but I know your type well

we keep on getting things done until our bodies tell us to take a break. I'm not a lot younger than you but my lower back and knees (used to play soccer a lot) are giving me clear signals at times.
Happy tractoring when you're able again!

well guys I was not getting better as much as I thought . The day after my last post I went down for a couple day with the headache again . A secound visit to local hospital they did CT scan and found blood pooling on my brain . soooo off to St. Micheals hospital in Toronto by bouncy bus / no lights. We have a saying that goes "Need that like a new hole in my head " Well it turned out that is what I really needed after all , compleate with drain and catch can . almost 2 onces of blood drained off pressure is releaved but I left with a pressure bruse on my brain and the side of my head looking more like Frankinstiens monster than than the Dr. Good news is am back home again and they don't think there any perminet damage but I have about 2 months or more convilessing .
So my message to you guys is becarefull in the shop as this all stems from a hit to the head I got when working on The Bride of Frankinstien . about 6 weeks ago I had the hood up fitting pieaces but was not secured . It fell forward and clubered me in the side of the head hard . What I did not know at the time is that it had ruptured a blood vessel . Safety first guy there is 1000 ways to die out there each day , It dosn't need to be at our own hand .

Oh Dave, quite a development, sorry to hear! Scary you got hit so bad! That's a hood from a Russian tank if it hurt you so. Glad there's no permanent damage! I could've visited you I was in Toronto since Wednesday. Oh well. Now you definitely have to take it easy for a while.
Take care and call on me for anything, we're returning to Port tonight.

Dave, that's some scary stuff.

Hope everyday finds you feeling better. I'll be thinking about you.
My only ride in the back of the meat wagon was from a serious blow to the head.

Didn't have any internal bleeding, but did some damage, and took some time to heal. When they said to take it easy they meant it.

I tried to push it and it didn't go well.
Take it easy.

Each day has had it's ups and downs . But time the pain wakes me up from one my naps I am reminded I am still alive . I work in about 4 hours cycles. I will get up from a rest I will try and ocupy my mind with something for couple of hours then the pain will return and tell me to take some meds and go rest again . Then the cycle repeats it's self . But it repeats

Sorry to hear about everyone's ride in the meat wagon and hope everyone is feeling better.
The only time I had that experience was when I worked all day moving some pea gravel with a wheel barrow up a ramp unto my trailer. Went home with the trailer full and wife called said she was going to Red Lobster with her Mom for dinner and asked me to go. I showered and drove there to meet them. We ate our meal and getting ready to leave when I started to get a stomach ache. I told the wife I was going to step outside to get some fresh air. Then I passed out and fell on the floor. An ambulance came and loaded me up on the gurney and started to wheel me out with an oxygen mask on my face. The smell of the mask was making me sick and I pulled it off and projectile vomited all over the wall in the entrance of the restaurant. When they wheeled me into the emergency at the hospital I repeated the ordeal with the vomiting. They held me overnight and did a battery of tests on me and never figured what exactly happened. I believe I got dehydrated and my blood pressure dropped and that's why I passed out. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
PS: My wife told me later they never charged us for the meal, they just left after they wheeled me out!
Keep the Peace

My ride was eight years ago. Doing fine now but can't say there hasn't been some lasting effects.
I was working on a pump on a Saturday when the roof to the pump house fell on my head. It was about a 5' x 5' shingled roof that was hinged at the top and tipped up against the wall of a home. I was on my knees leaning over the edge working on the pump, the board the hinges were fastened to broke loose and the lid fell. I never seen it coming. A metal d-handle hit me in the forehead and cut down through my eyebrow. It nocked me out cold and broke my glasses. At some point I kinda came to but had no idea what happened or what was going on. I took my shirt off to wipe my head but had no comprehension that I was bleeding. I was trying to pack up the service truck and get out of there but couldn't.
At some point I called home, my wife said I was talking so stupid she knew something was wrong, thought I might have heatstroke. She knew where I was working and drove over to check on me. She said I was wondering around covered in blood and taking tools in and out of the truck. She called the meat wagon. I don't remember much about the ride or the next couple of hours.
It's not funny but I wish there would have been a camera somewhere, I would have liked to see what I was doing and for how long. I had let the boom down and packed up the hoist and out riggers on the service truck. Even tried to fix my glasses. The blood trail showed I had been busy.

I am doing better ,Thanks Matt. I go back to see the Nearo surgine in couple of weeks for a follow up scans and see how I am responding . I will know then if I am aloud to drive again or still grounded . I still struggle to get much done spending most of my time trying to remember what I was doing or where I left what ever I had in my hand . I seem to be healing ok for what I can see , I won't know for a year if there is any lasting damage . Thank god for spell check . Being an active independent person , the hardest thing has been not being able to be active and dependent on others. Oh well , still looking at the leaves and not the roots .

Got some good news Weds. Follow up with the surgical Dr. after another CT scan and everything is healing up nicely. He gave me the go ahead to start weaning myself off the post surgery Meds.

Although they were good for my recovery , they do come with some less than desirable side effects . If all goes well I will be cleared to start driving again by Xmas and maybe a couple of

for New Years . My son has had my truck while I have be told not to drive doing some repairs and repainting the old girl . The truck and I should be ready at the same time . There will be no more of this

ing aloud . I ware a bump cap when doing anything now . I can't say enough about the staff down at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto ,but I hope I never have to go back .
Keep your stick on the ice and leave the

teenage rockers .

that's good news Dave, glad to hear it.
We'll have to have a virtual beer on New years.
Back in the day, one bar would call another and we would all do dial-a-shot.
Keep getting better,
Tim
