200 cloves of garlic were planted in the fall. Although there is still a foot of snow cover on the garden it wont be to long before the larger garden will get tilled.

That's a great video! My 446 can't go so strong as yours even with the tiller rotating forward. I pretty much go couple of inches at a time, and this after I went once with the 10" moldboard plow.

After I tilled the garden, the garlic went on two rows on the edge. Then I spread 20lbs of Winter (Fall) Rye, as green manure on October 18.
Because of the warm weather we had, look at the rye grass on November 7!

That might have been the second time through with the tiller or following plowing a few days earlier. When breaking out new ground with the tiller even the 448 needs to inch forward or it stalls the tiller.

There is more than one way to prep a garden.

Even more impressed that you do both the plowing and the tilling without Ag tires! Eugene, are you located far from Stratford? Do you know that guy near Stratford with the JD combines cemetery? It's where I got my wheel weights.

I am 45 minutes from Stratford and am very familiar with the bone yard. There is also a combine salvage, Shantz Farm Equipment, Alma Ontario. I have used combine final drives for turn table machines and welding rotators.

Since you mention garlic over in the other thread, I'm curious how you deal with weed control. We planted garlic every Fall for about 5 years now. Up until last year we did all the weeding by hand or hoe, what a pain!!! Last year I decided to try woodchips. So I got this delivered:
Used a layer of about 3-4in, and the weed situation was better.
The garlic did well, it was 3ft tall. And we got a good harvest o scapes.

But to get the chips out of the garden at the end of the season was a pain. And I didn't want to leave it in the garden, decomposing wood robs the soil of nitrogen.

I'm thinking of using straw if I could find it near by at a decent price.

There is a lot of seed left behind in straw . You would need to run in through rollers to crush the seed before applying.

Dave, that's another device I don't have, next to the flame thrower I know you're using to kill weeds! :o But I'm thinking it might not be worse than what I'm getting every year. Don't know where the weeds are coming, but they're nasty thick and strong in our garden.
