Case 224 mowing deck repair.

Soooo, I’ve been workin on the deck for the 224. I’ve been replacing spindle bearings. I did the centre spindle bearings a few months ago. Then decided to do the two other spindles bearings. So looking at the deck from the rear, I just finished the bearings on the left side spindle, the one closest to the exit chute. Still have to do the right side spindle yet. Not to bad to do, once you get at them. But I did learn, not to put the coupling that goes over the spindle, between the two bearings, in first then put the two bearings in, thinking you can fish the spindle thru the two bearing and coupling. If you do that, the bearing can turn sideways and block the passage thru, while installing the last bearing. Then to only way to fix it is to take out a bearing and turn the coupling around, then put the spindle thru, then reinstall the bearing you took out. Amazing how ya learn not to do that again. Hehe. Say, not a bad ramble, any way, one more set of bearings to do and she’s more ready for grass cutting. It does a lovely job of cutting grass.
I’m not sure of the model of deck, put those are the bearings that fit. You can get them at Napa.

Hehe. Ya. Still two feet of snow in places. But some places have grass showing. But that’s where I was clearing. All snow and ice base gone off driveway. But had snow and wind over nite. So it’s white again in places with the new snow. :40:

Ya winter is not over yet. We’ve had storms in May before.

Soooo, right side spindle not in good shape. Coupling seized on, maybe bearing too. And top top bearing wore a groove in the spindle shaft.
I’ll have to do some :hm: thinkin. Didn’t think things were that bad. :40: I can see heat and welding and grinding in my future. :giggle:

When the shaft turns in the bearing race, it's an indication that the top lock nut loosened or was not torqued properly when last assembled. Thread interference lock nuts should always be replaced after removal and never reused. You need to check the length of the spacer between the bearings for wear as it has also been slipping against the inner bearing races once the clamping force of the nut went away. Minimum length is 1.823", any less will place a side load on the bearings, you'll know because the shaft will be stiff when turning after assembly. Torque on the top nut is 100 ft. lbs. Torque it, hit it on top and bottom with a heavy dead blow hammer to seat everything and then re-torque. If everything turns smoothly after that, you're good to go.

So after a bunch of goings on, I got the coupling off and the bearing off. They were seized on good. !!
So on to figuring out how to weld up, build up, the worn part from the bearing on the spindle and smooth in back down to the bearing fits reasonable. I also think I need a washer on the large washer at the bottom for the inner race on the new bearing to sit on.
It’s coming along.

Yes, there should be a thin washer between the big washer and the lower bearing and between the top bearing and the pulley as well. Part number C28972, I measured a new one for you, .057" thick.
