Building a bigger toy box.

This was our mobile shop when I started in 2002.
20241018_181627.jpg
It served it's purpose well for 10 years on the road.
20241018_184224.jpg
The was used a few more years as a stationary shop, before becoming a tool bin. It is equipped with an onan generator, 2 heater/AC units, lots of shelving, a workbench, and tiedowns for welders. This is the first time it has been moved in 15 years. It took a 1/2 day of moving stuff to get it pulled out of its spot under a tree

Today with a bit of help from a nephew, alot of stuff was moved across the yard.
20241019_160142.jpg
All that remains to be moved is the original forklift shed.
20241019_155546.jpg
It is 10 × 10 and will be replaced by a 30 x 40 building. Hopefully permits and concrete will be in the ground by Christmas.

The little barn was heavier than expected. The skid steer would just not balance, and the forklift found the ground to soft.

Salvaged plywood made a road and team forklift and skid steer did the job.

The videographer/supervisor did not approve of the master plan from the start. If only she knew of the moves in my past.

Yup, I know what you mean. It was almost like my :wife: was behind the camera!

@Spike188 That looks like a totally acceptable and approved bit of tomfoolery to me!

Glad you got it moved and it held together.

A requirement for the build is location of septic system in relationship to the building site. A 40 year old hand sketch of the bed, tank and lines was not sufficient.
20241025_141053.jpg
Unfortunately the 64l6bh rebuild is not completed so a borrowed Deere was used to expose the bed for official survey locates. The 646L used to back fill.
20241031_142201.jpg
That was prime seat time.

:afraid: Elevation and building drawings will be submitted Monday. The trailer has been sold as non usable. Not wanting to miss the opertunity of passing it on to someone else, today is clean out day.

Plans were to wait for trailer clean out untill building is up. I didn't want to handle stuff twice. Getting to transformers, spools of electrical wire, panels and other building supplies shelved in the trailer. Hopefully shovel will be in the ground in 3 weeks.

The end of an era.
20241118_151609.jpg
Many, many hours were spent working in climate controlled comfort and quite doing light curtain tune up and repair in this trailer. The largest system repaired on site was a 48 beam safety curtain that bounced around three corners via mirrors. The transmitter unit would be mounted near the work bench and the receiver at the far end. The transmitter unit would turn off if any of the uv beam modules failed or were misaligned. The safety relays and a/b phase controller contained 4 ice cube relays that made an audible click when a phase pulled in or dropped out. Removing the complete safety system to the trailer for service meant being able to hear the clicks without needing to set up an oscilloscope to monitor the relays. The scope was used to measure the signal strength of each set of transmitter and receiver modules . Small press breaks and stamping presses used 24" curtains. Press breaks could be a challenge because the transmitter/receiver units were typically 9' apart but up to 21'. Alignment/aim of the each set of t/r units was critical because a poor alignment could cause cross-talk between phases and be hard to cleanup.

Most of the repairs were replacing the sending module and or the related resistors. A lot of soldering was preformed at the workbench.

In short the trailer meant being able to do a repair turn around in less than a day.

The light curtain technology changed dramatically about 20 years ago and that part of the business slowly faded away. Also as control boards and electronic components shrank repairs became impossible in a mobile setting.

Later, the trailer also became a clean room when doing bearing packing on gear boxes.
20241118_151329.jpg
At the end of the day everything in the trailer was packed into the 10X10 shed, awaiting sorting and organizing when the new toy box is completed.

Lots of paving stones moved.

The max that could be pulled up hill without loosing traction with 3 stones in the bucket also.

This is the week we planed on putting a shovel in the ground bur alas, no permit in hand. The best I can hope for is next Monday, a week from now. The 646 has been pulled of clean up duty and snow blower attached. Weather guessers are saying a warmer next week. That would help the building start.

Excavator arrived this morning about 8:30. It was 34 and foggy. The first order of business was taking out a tree.
20241210_101349.jpg
The track hoe was brand new on it's first dig. There was a bit of a learning curve on on setting up the auto depth control. Once the Lazer and shovel were zeroed in the site took shape rapidly.
20241210_122825.jpg
The base of the footing will be 4ft below grade and topped with a 2 foot stem wall above grade.

@DavidBarkey Stem walls will need to 6 hours above freezing. We may have to heat. A temporary tarped structure is being planned for the floor pour. It will be heated for smooth finishing and about 6 hours curing. Our target for the floor is next Wednesday. Weather is suppose to be on our side then.

Temps here today was 17f/-8c degrees The stem wall poured was an Artic 1 mix and finished at 4 pm. Tomorrow morning the forms will be stripped. Monday we will backfill with tampers running parallel on both sides of the wall. 2 feet of wall is above grade. Tuesday the sillplates will be install and 8 foot studs mounted on 4 foor centers. On the studs will be 30 foot obi joist spanning the width of the building. Over the structure will be a tarp covering the building. Wednesday will be a standard mix pour of a 6" floor. After troweling the temporay building ends will be closed . 2 propane heaters will going for at least 12 hours. Construction will halt until after New Years to allow the floor cure.

Day 5
20241214_093309.jpg
backfilling begins.
20241216_092728.jpg
outer trench gets backfilled across overhead door cutouts.
20241216_103950.jpg
Insulation was added to the below grade portion of the stem wall before backfill.
20241216_121931.jpg
A first priority was to make an access path at the front to backfill the inner trench. Both sides of the stem wall were backfilled simultaneously to relieve stress on the green wall during compaction.
20241216_133308.jpg
Backfilling the inner trench was completed 6 inches below grade and covered with 6" of A gravel.
20241216_142136.jpg
A gravel was spread and packed
20241216_164632.jpg
Once packing was near completion laser leveling took place. The far end was shot level and the front 20 feet given a 3 inch slope in 20 feet. We finished pad grading with an hour of light rain.

All material used will be recycled into the permanent structure.
20241218_130516.jpg
framework was up by noon of day 7
20241218_183647.jpg
Grading was completed while tarp went on.

Day 8
20241218_183647.jpg
Up at 5:30, concrete finisher is in a panic. Temperature is -4c/25f and he thinks this is our first kick at the can.
20241219_073716.jpg
First placement of mud. 6" artic2 mix with fiberglass.
20241219_075110.jpg
One of 3 truckload.
20241219_101524.jpg
Looking good.
20241219_200521.jpg
One space heater kept floor temperature above 40 degrees.
20241219_180255.jpg
At the end of the day there is nothing to complain about.

Propane bottle change at 1 AM when out door temperature was as forcast. -12c/ 10f. The lowest temperature of this winter.the night was crystal clear with a 1/2 moon and both dippers hanging in the night sky.
20241221_235100.jpg
Up again at 5am for a temperature check and it's even colder, -20c/5f. The floor is over 60 hours old and at -1.6c/29f.

When propane runs out the heater will be shut down untill we start building in January.

13 days since ground breaking, Build day 9
20241223_093006.jpg
Excavation begin for placing gas and electrical trench.
20241223_114713.jpg
9 loads of fill trucked to the neighbors.
20241223_093011.jpg
A 3 foot bucket we used close to the house.
20241223_104916.jpg
Gas and electrical can be placed in same trench with 12" separation.
20241223_150014.jpg
Any slack time was used moving framing lumber into the tent.
20241223_162426.jpg
At end of day elevation grading and utilities trench was completed. A 14' wide parking area was included along North side of building. We were short 2 loads gravel because pits closed at noon. Pits reopen January 2. I am taking the hint and doing the same.

Ice build up on the far end had to be dealt with after holidays.
20250105_170503.jpg
A quick slash, a bit of snow removal, and we were set for Build Day 10.
20250106_135449.jpg
In spite of -13c/9f Outdoors it was comfortable working with 1 propane heater going.
20250107_100417.jpg
By end of day 10 the 46 foot long wall was framed and sheeted.
20250107_111924.jpg
build day 11 was dedicated to framing the North wall.
20250108_081327.jpg
It was laid out on top of the south wall.
20250108_104231.jpg
Today, build day 11, morning temperature was -17 c/ 1.5F, the 30 foot long back wall was framed on top of the side walls.
20250108_141727.jpg
With the 3 walls completed it was time to take down the temporary building.
20250108_160653_01.jpg
By 4pm the "tent" and truss structure was almost gone.
20250108_162049.jpg
We enjoyed the heated structure but it had served it's purpose, protecting the fresh concrete from freezing and the bonus of wall assembly in a comfortable environment.

At end of day the east end gable was plumbed and braced to a tree.
20250110_072118.jpg
Day 14 began, a little nippy, -14c / 7F.
20250110_114807.jpg
By noon most of the trusses were in place and the west end gable was almost ready to move into position.

@RoamingGnome There are 4 of us here most of the time but I am still taking a few service calls and my contractor buddy is away some. I have worked with him for 30 years, sharing ideas, tools, and support. He is super at scheduling and logistics. So far we lost one afternoon of production due to high wind while setting forms. Working in the trenches that day started out with eyes full of dirt and a sand blasted face. So far cold has not stopped us.

20250114_104930.jpg
The roof was set on the ground and the walls set in place by noon.
20250114_130518.jpg
Steel for the front arrive during lunch time. Wall bracing and setting up the steel door frame took several hours in the afternoon.
20250114_143207.jpg
The roof was on and bolted down by 3 pm.
20250114_162045.jpg
By 4:30 the crane was gone and our crew was tired. Today's crew was the 5 of us regulars and 2 crane operators.

Hopefully it’s going to be a short winter. The last few days have been a welcome change in the temperature. Keep up the good work. It looks absolutely fantastic. Have a good weekend. Paul

followed by boxing in steel post and beams.

Using the tarp from the temporary building,, the front was closed in. Steel cladding will not arrive until Feb 19.

We opted to put vapor barrier on ceiling and strap for steel.
20250127_165314.jpg
Then insulate, vapor barrier, and strapping on sidewalls, after the electrical rough in.

Most of a week 1/2 days spent by 2 of us.

Overhead doors arrived as scheduled and were installed Wednesday.
20250205_164728.jpg
Our forklift was pulled across the tundra for its 1st night inside in 15 years.

Even the pickup got a night indoors.

The site is starting to look presentable.

And the greatest moment of all, the 646 is in it's new home.

@DavidBarkey The exterior and interior cladding is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, Feb 19. Weather permitting, 3 of us will finish the roof that week. Once the roof is finished, weather will dictate inside or outside cladding installation. Soffit and trim is going on next week.
@MattA 30 X 46 X 14 sidewalls. 2 overhead doors are 12 X 12.

Awesome , I imagine you have waited a long time to have a shop like this . I love my warm little shop , but size does matter . So just a little envious . Hopefully the weather is nice enough you can get at least the roof on for now .

The steel arrived Thursday as scheduled. Today, Saturday, Feb 22 was a Sunny day but still well below freezing. Not planning ahead during site prep ment several hours of extra seat time today.
20250222_124147.jpg
The fresh air makeup unit was stored as far from the build as anything.
20250222_124156.jpg
At least it wasn't boxed by other priceless objects.
20250222_124144.jpg
Backing up hill while breaking open 2 feet of snow was impossible even with tire chains. The loader/blower combination was perfect. Driving uphill into the snowpack, then bragging a pile back with the bucket was the method of choice. The bonus was dragging the pile back far enough to be able to blow the last dragging while dragging a new pile.

What is the rating of a unit like that ? How much heat does it recover ? I have one in the house , but because the core is plastic it is not as efficient as it could be . Does that have the metal exchanger core ? I want to put one in the shop at some point . Recommendations ? 24'x 32 ' shop .

@DavidBarkey The best it will do is a complete turn over of air in 16 minutes on high speed or 32 minutes on low. It does have metal exchanger. It has never been installed but around 15 years old. I picked it up in a plant cleanup and couldn't find a buyer for it. It has been in storage waiting for installation in a toybox. It's time has arrived.
20250224_103859.jpg
It was too windy for starting roof cladding today so we hung the first interior sheet at 10:30 this morning. At 5:30 the 3 of us cleaned up.
20250224_174704.jpg
2 walls are clad and 3 windows trimmed.

She has been busy framing her photography work. I have been warned that some will be hung in the shop.

Crazy weather gave us the break we were looking for. Tuesday afternoon. Temperature briefly climbed above freezing with very high winds, leaving a dry plywood roof. We spent the afternoon predrilling the all of the roof metal. Wednesday we woke up to a sunny and wind still day.
20250226_111853.jpg
By noon 3 of us had the south side finished. After lunch temperatures climbed above freezing.
20250226_163914.jpg
At 4:30 the North side was clad.
20250227_071019.jpg
This morning the roof is snow covered again.

Building progress slowed to a couple days per week.
20250321_133842.jpg
High winds and damp weather, even with temperatures above freezing took it toal on us. The 50 year old Clark was the only one that took the weather in stride.
20250321_150420.jpg
Even installing the final metal on the front side was brutal.
20250322_084238.jpg
But Friday we wound up the structural part of the build.
20250319_190605.jpg
Last Monday the old Clark was brought inside to set up a nearly new car hoist.
20250319_190552.jpg
The shop was organized a bit with the addition of some shelving. Our electrician is busy boiling maple syrup for thr next 2 weeks. Once the ceiling electrical is completed R40 insulation will be blown into the attic. Eta for occupancy permit is approximately 3 weeks away.

It looks fantastic Eugene . A hoist makes some things soooo much easier . You love everything about it except all your "new" friends wanting to use it .

What @DavidBarkey said... both parts -
Awesome job on the building, and also the reaction of 'friends' when they find out you have a warm, dry shop with a hoist!

Progress on the toybox has been at a snails pace while waiting on ground too thaw and electricians to finish doing maple syrup.
20250413_151058.jpg
But landscaping has begun
20250413_131931.jpg
and lumber gathered up.
20250410_174847.jpg
The hoist has been tested.
20250416_194048.jpg
Modifications have been made to the table used for cutting siding. It now mobile and used for storage.
20250419_133627.jpg
More importantly are the steel palettes that will be used to store tractors untill restorations can begin.

8 of these on dimmers. 3 year old units from a surplus vender. Switching rows 1/3 and 2/4. They are easy on my eyes.

Started moving the baby barn to its permanent location. It will be tucked to the back of the shop. Plans are to use it for twinter/summer tire storage and a couple of tractors.

A gamble did not pay off. The gravel was not tight enough to carry the forklift without laying plywood down. It took 2 hours this morning to get plywood positiined and the forklift back on them.
20250424_200830.jpg
But at end of day, little barn is placed, parging is complete, gasline is terminated and backfill. We also discovered that the gas regulator diaphragm was leaking. A call to our supplier brought quick response and replacement.

Email from building department received this afternoon saying "permit closed".
20250507_180726.jpg
The 448 had the starter rebuilt 1-1/2 years ago and needed the muffler replaced. It was pulled into the shop last night and driven out this morning. This afternoon the tiller was taken down from the rack and attached to the 448. Our garden is tilled.
20250508_191942.jpg
the day was finished off by moving the milling machine into it's probable permanent location. All of the steel pallets were stacked and plywood leftover from the build was cut down to surface the pallets. Like the building permit I'll probably close this thread also.
