646 cab

I brought home the $20 tractor cab today between showers. It was a bit of a struggle squeezing it into the back of my Jeep Grand Cherokee. Ended up having it stick out of the back by six inches. The seller gave me a couch cushion to put over the top back that was sticking out, to protect the rear window. The lift gate closed 3/4 of the way and put a bungee on the lift gate to hold it down. No problem driving it home. Slid it out the back and flipped it unto a pallet. This will be in storage until winter time when I bring it into the shop.

That is a great start to an awesome cab Harry . If you make removeable doors ,you can leave it on year round . It is nice not to have a wet seat or be bouthered when it starts raining in the middle of a project.

I have the cab framework all assembled upside down except for the glass. Some friends are coming very next week and I’ll have them help me lift it and set it on the 646. I need to finish the mini loader project and switch places with the 646.

I painted the cab framework with gloss rustoleum black paint. Today I had three of my friends from high school over for some homemade smoked Kielbasa and libations. Always a great time having these boys over. I had them lift the cab unto the 646, then block it up with cribing to get some measurements. It’s close to where it needs to be, now for some creativity in fabricating brackets to bolt the cab on. Concerns are having enough room to get in and out of the cab. Having room to open and close the hood. Clearance for lifting arms of the front loader. Head room inside of cab with a little extra for someone then taller than the current owner. So far it’s been an interesting project that I’m enjoying and that’s important to me.

On a 600 series Compact tractor the hood hinge is bolted on the top of the tower by three bolts. I’m thinking of attaching the cab by the window frame by the hood hinge. I was looking to fill the space under the cab frame to the rear fenders with 1/8” thick sheet steel. Then attach the cab to the fenders there. That’s my idea after the observation but sometimes plans change. Thanks for your input always appreciated .

Today I removed the hood and then made a transition plate to move the hood forward about 2”. Then fabricated an angle iron bracket to bolt the transition plate and the front of the cab to the tractor utilizing the holes where the hood hinge was bolted on. It took a while to make the parts then bolt them on. Now on to make some brackets to attach the rear of cab to the tractor utilizing.

@Harry - Great Looking Cab
Out of curiosity... What size rear tires are you running on your 646?
The tires on both my 644 are very weather/age cracked - to the point that I didn't want to try loading them with RV antifreeze...
I've been looking for used 27x8.50-15 tires, but they just don't seem to show up on FB Marketplace in my area - when it actually gets warmer I can finish painting my 16" rims that I was going to put AG tires on - but they were really intended for either the 195 or the 446...
or maybe I'll just find some used 15" truck tires and say 'good enough' - Why are all the aggressive ATV tires only 14"???

Gerry, these big ags I found on CL a few years ago. I believe they are 11:00 X 16. The guy bought them for his Kubota tractor and then after the job he bought them for was over decided to sell them. I think I got a good deal for $300 for tires loaded with rims that bolted right on. I only had to make footboards and fenders to complete the conversion.

@Harry Your cab design is intriguing. The wider finders and footboards are probably a huge bonus for driver comfort with a wider cab.

I finally installed the glass today. It always seems to complete a project the little things are always a PITA. The only item I’m still pondering is to make some short curtains out of some vinyl to fill the gap between the fenders and the cab. How does she look Boys?

Looks great Harry!

First through that came to mind was heave canvas for the curtain around the bottom. Might hold up better that vinyl.
Custom wheatland fenders, custom cab, your making that into quite a machine!

@Harry Marine Vinyl . Take and make a pattern out of cardboard to have sewn to shape . A lope across the top edge for a 1/4" steel rod to go through . You will need to attach 3 tabs to hang it from and make cut in the middle for the centre one . A lope sewn along the bottom that follows the conture big enough to fit some 1/8" chain through like they use to do with curtains . Eyelet at the ends to tie corners together .
Looking good .
