What year was it produced. The what year charts gives the fist one produced in 1973 as 9667632. This one is SN#9667232
Is the chart incorrect or were 224's built in 1972 also?

This manual might be part of the clue. The what year starts the SN# at 9667632.
This parts catalog with printed date of January 1973 starts the serial number at 9667000 making this unit number 352 off the production line. The only question I have now is did production only began in 1973.

Well, if the manual was printed in Jan. '73, the tractor could still be produced in '72.

The serial number chart uses the calendar year of production which is not the same as the "model year" of the tractor. 1973 is the first model year for the 224, but just like new cars they started building them in August after the July plant shutdown.

The first 224 tractors had engine mounting problems. Faulty engine mounts after Serial number 9667619 were corrected at factory by Feb 1973. So it appears it was indeed made in 1972 for sale as a 1973 model. Fairly sure they were made from 73-1988.
I have been told the early production ones 72 had T-handle PTO lift lever and others had pull out knob. Could be the other way around. I am not completely sure on that. Maybe you can take a good picture of the lever on yours and someone with a 224 with a higher serial number do the same and we could compare them.

On the off chance that is the original engine, use this link to figure out its date of manufacture.
