Great place to visit for sure, thanks for posting @MattA . Those cabled excavators make me thinks how much harder it was to build big construction before hydraulics.

Just as I was going through once more to make sure everything works fine before listing the 446 for sale I notice a small oil leak on the attachment cylinder. The rod is in perfect shape, and it leaks right around it. So off it needs to come so the o-ring can be replaced. Fortunately this is not a big problem and can be fixed easily.


Everything else seems just as before, this Onan starts on the first crank and is strong. It could use a new banana plate maybe but I'm not brave enough to tackle that one.

One of those times when buying more than you need comes in handy. When I got seals for the 644 cylinders I got extra ones. With new o-ring and wiper seal the leak is no more.

Harry is correct, banana plates are only found on 600 series.

Im with you Harry! I’m still learning to use my 648 but I was really impressed at how easily it cuts roots!

The curl is the strongest movement I believe. With the overall lightweight of the 6XX series, you learn that keeping the bucket up against the ground, and curling in, or out can move a tremendous amount of weight. I welded a hook on the back of my bucket for pulling stumps. With the bucket curled all the way in, I hook on, and curl out with the bucket still on the ground for support. Rips reasonable stumps right out. Obviously you're not going to pull a 50 year old oak out that way, but I wouldn't want to be under that on a little machine anyway.
