I think if you keep watching you may find one from one of them old tractors that had them. Also watch the old walk behinds, some also had sickle attachments.
It would be an interesting project.

Picking this beauty up today or tomorrow (sans the skeleton). Yeah, it'll take me a long time to do something with it but it came up for sale nearby and at a really good price!

I like the skeleton.

Looks in good shape. (The mower, obviously not the skeleton)
I have one of them ground driven mowers. I have pulled it behind the 4118 but it's more than it can handle in the thick stuff. The compact tractor handles it though.

I watched the market for something like that for a while Tim. They come up for sale rarely, prices are high, and they are too small.

I really like the sickles. I can remember as a kid the farmers using them to cut the fields with them. The link here is more for a home owner model. I never had a use for one, but I think they are cool!

Boy Spike, You little saying at the bottom of the page about your 646BH not being complete, is almost becoming my motto about my 4118. In december it will be 4 years since I drug the thing home on my trailer. I have had a rattle in the thing since I got it running and I haven't been able to find it. My younger brother was here overnight this week and I think we have found it.
Wish me luck!

@Harry, the Hayban sickle bar mower is very much sought after! Not just by us, but other gt tractor enthusiasts. I have not seen one for sale yet around here.
Thank you for pointing it out!

Found this as another example someone has on a simplicity tractor. He's selling it for $600, it's hydraulic. Looks to me more like hand made though

Don't know what it's from Harry, kinda is Cub yellow, but their front mount sickles drove in the center. It is definitely worth a look.

Looks like 20 to 22 inches wide. No idea what it's from but not something big.

We had a Bolens 2 wheeler about that size, but that was also a center mounted setup. Yellow paint was lighter as well, though that could have been faded...
I could certainly see this example being an easy conversion to side or boom mounted.

I think this 42" mower from a Gravely would be my 1st choice at adapting to a 244

The seller contacted me via email to say he wasn't sure what it from off of, but did say the cutting bar length is 24". That is a little smaller than I was hoping. The only reason I would like one is for cutting around my Green Giant Arborvitae trees. There is always a few weeds that the mowing deck doesn't get. Maybe 24" would be enough if it was spaced away from the tractor a bit. I was thinking of adding a sickle bar to the 444 project that is going to be strictly a mowing machine, with a deck and hydro bagger on the back. Deck underneath and bagger on the back, that leaves only the front for attaching one. If the manual belt clutch is used for the deck than I would have to make it a hydro driven sickle bar. Thoughts and suggestions are always appreciated.

Sounds like a good idea Eugen. I never thought about attaching it to the deck and belt driven off the deck. That is a way to get it away from the tractor for more reach. That's an idea I'll have to investigate! I appreciate your perspective, thank you.

Interesting project Harry, lots to think about.
If not cutting big areas and only a few times a year, the short bar mounted offset in front could work well. If you're going to use it to get around and under the trees, up front would give the best visibility. It wouldn't weigh as much as a larger one. Would be easier on the front end, wouldn't need as much counter weight. Some type of attachment system would need to be fabbed to attach it.
Making it 3pt mounted would give greater height adjustment, and may be easier to fab.
Running it hydraulically is probably best option, maybe not the cheapest, but lots of flexibility.

Thanks for the suggestions Tim. I appreciate your insight. I was thinking if it was mounted on the side I could drive around the trees with the sickle underneath to cut the grass and weeds. When not using I would hope it could be hinged up at ninety degrees. It appears that the drive pulley when looking down at the unit is on the right. What I need to do is go look at the unit and see if it is feasible for my purpose.
Everyone has their own insight and I enjoy hearing from others.

It's a good thing he hasn't sold it yet Harry. Hopefully it's something you can use. I parked my large sickle bar mower now in the yard, it's a nice ornament (says my wife) at the very least. Hopefully I can do something with the cutting bar next year. It will be a difficult project for me, but I like that challenge.
Looking forward to seeing what you might be doing with yours if you get it.

Someone posted this on Facebook, apparently it's part of a 446 package. Interesting, it has a hydraulic pump! Looks like it would go on a belt on the pto.

I emailed the seller and they replied it was sold, even though it was still listed on C/L for another two weeks. Now the ad is taken down. Oh well, I'll keep looking sooner or later something will be available.

They must have figured it was the best way to transfer power on a variety of brands of tractors and control the cutter speed.
Would not be a cheap date today with a hydraulic motor and pump.
Sure be nice to have if it the price was right.

I think it was to make it more universal . Taking little to adapt to different tractors.

Hehe hereβs my sickle bar mower. Worked good. And you can cut backing up. 18 volt, I think, hedge trimmer. Black and Decker. Just another typical weird idea I came up up with.
Good thing with Grunt is, it has a bull low first gear and on idle it can go very slow, if needed.
And some how I had it hooked up so when you lowered it it would turn on. And when lifted it would shut off. Hehe.

Mine just doesn't have the skeleton.
They seem to sell ok here, some people pay crazy money for them for lawn ornaments, guys pay ok for them to cut like us. Amish buy them if they are in good condition. I guess I'll see.

Thanks Matt, the lake is a little 10 acre spring fed lake. It has been a special place to fish all my life.
It's going to be a while before I'll need to mow, it just greened up yesterday, and we have snow showers coming the next two days.
