Every time I split, I think it might be nice to have one of the modern spitters that sit high/flat like that, and then can go vertical... I can't really justify replacing ol' reliable though. My folks bought an Amerind MacKissic new back in the 70's, and that thing has split some wood over the years... 7 Horse Briggs is still doing the job, though I really need to rebuild the carb. (uncle fights with me over that as "it runs just fine, don't mess with it") (it runs pretty nicely, but on almost full choke)

Operating position is rough on the back as it's just the main box beam/hyd tank running from the axle, down to the ground on like a 20 degree angle, so you're down on the ground, and it always seems to be wet when I'm splitting. Not easy on the back either.
About the only issue we ever had was needing to rebuild the valve, and I just replaced the rubber engine mount bushings a year or so ago.

Try this , Start engine and run until warm . Idle down ,add 2 onces of seafoam to tank and full throttle with choke on until start black smoke then star backing off choke as need until tank runs dry then refill and restart and see if it will run properly without choke . Than will cure a alot , but that much seafoam will make an engine hard to start . That is why I try to add it while running if possible or quickly restart so it doe not have time to get into carb before restarting if while running is not safe thing to do . Other thing is to check the vent hole in the fuel cap for venting properly .

So, you're suggesting straight seafoam in a basically empty tank?
Seafoam has done wonders for other engines mixed in the fuel, but I've never tried it straight.

Tank vent is no issue, fuel flow is excellent to the carb.

No , about half to 3/4 full of fuel and add seafoam , It's a small fuel tank . Higher concentrations of seafoam are very hard to light . That is why I said with it already running if possible. Fuel tank on that is most likely only 1/2 gallon , so add 2 once to half a tank would be adding to 1 quart . Run until empty , then refill with straight gas and see how it runs . If better but not completely good , do it again . If no improvement you will need to take apart and clear what ever the blockage is .
