dill seed

Post by DavidBarkey »

We planted a whole row of dill this year . Used fresh in the cucumber dills . Yesterday I went out and collected the seed front the plants now that it has all died off and dried out . Ended up with about 4" in the bottom of 5 gallon pail . Still have to clean/blow off the chaff and dust , but all in all a good haul . After cleaning it will be dried some more before jarring for storage .

I’ve never grown dill. How do you collect the seed? Do you cut the sprigs and let them dry?

During the season we harvest a little from each plant at a time the frills (leafs) . At the end of the season the flower heads will dry out and go brown in colour . At that point the seeds can be harvested . I go out with a 5 gallon pail hung from my neck with a strap at waist height . With clippers , cut the large flower heads with full size seeds and rub them between my hands to release the seeds into the pail . When harvest is done the chaff and dust need to be blown away in the cleaning process a lot like would have been done with grains . At this point I like to continue to dry the seeds before jarring . Seeds then can be used as is or ground in a little coffee grinder .
