I don’t think that would do any thing to hurt the oil other than heat it. It would start to circulate once it started heating, always bringing cooler oil up from the bottom. Just my take on it.

Yes it directly in the oil at the bottom of the pan so as the oil warms up the convection currants will cause it to circulate in the pan . Plus the aluminum pan and block will suck up the heat . Being outside below freezing it would take a long time for things to get hot enough to worry about.

"Lubricating oils, as it turns out, have an average chain length of 36 carbon atoms, this gives them a very high boiling point (somewhere around 300 degrees Celsius or 572 degrees Fahrenheit)."

"Water turns into steam at 212°F. Mixing traditional ethylene glycol antifreeze with water in a 50-50 ratio increases the boiling point to 223°F, which is close to the operating temperature of an engine. "

Goal is to be able to put it on a timer or something so to be able to take the chill off before firing up for all the obvious reasons .

Makes sense Dave! This is certainly inspiring me to consider it for my tractors.

One hood from two . One hood the top and bottom were rotted out bad . The other the top as seen in first pic badly pitted to the point it weighed about half the other one . Seeing as everything is already in pieces I might do a 2 piece hood set up . :hm:
