Muffler repair

The muffler is off of a 448 and in excellent condition except for end plate separated on outlet side.

I see 2 approaches to repairing it. 1- gas weld using brass rod or 2- gas weld using steel filler.

Any suggestion or pointer would be appreciated.

Remove the inlet pipe from that side . Make a new end place with holes large enough to slip over the welds on exiting pipes so you can weld to the welds . A lot more of the outer edge of the end plate will be too thin to weld to .

Or , use you welding torch to see how much of the end plate melts away untill you get to weldable thickness . Then make a ring that will fill the gap . Cut it in 2 and weld away . That way you don't have to disturb the pipes .

If you decide to gas weld, my preference is brass for this repair. I find it really hard to gas weld mufflers with steel filler as there is no carbon left in the steel of the muffler due to the heating and cooling cycles. Really a question for someone with more welding experience than myself.

Perhaps Harry could weigh in on this?

Bob, Thank you for the reminder about using steal filler rod on mufflers. Dave, I may make an end plate like you suggest.

Looks thin but hard to tell. I would do Dave’s second idea.
