Hello from S.W. Ontario

I just picked up a 1980 Case 446 today. I am quite impressed with the clever designs and engineering that has gone into these tractors.
There is a couple of things that need some TLC. A paint job for starters, front pivot pin kit, the rear hitch kit is missing and the steering pinion/rack is sloppy. Is there a place in Canada where parts for these tractors can be had? If not here then the US.

Welcome to the forum! And congrats on getting the 446! There are a bunch of us from Ontario, the maritimes and the US. I personally looked hard for a source of parts in Canada and never could find one. There are at least three vendors in the US that carry a wide varietate of both OEM and after market. They have a presence on this forum. They also have been helping many of us with troubleshooting our tractors. Just make sure they ship using USPS to avoid the large brokerage charges of commercial carriers.

For used parts you might have luck with spares that members here might have.

Welcome steadfast! Congrats on your 446. Lots of great people here as others have mentioned and lots of great support. Be careful with these machines as they have a tendency to multiply... As Eugen has mentioned many US dealers have parts you can order along with expert advice.

Post some pics when you are able!

We are glad that you found this site. Check out the manuals section and do not be afraid to ask questions. The skill sets of our members run deep and varied. Bearings can be sourced locally but you will find that belts from our dealers are worth the bring up from south of the border.

Eugen's post in the Forum section has some good pointers on how to post photos and attachments.

Welcome to the site Steadfast!

I used to work for a company out of New Hamburg years ago and got to see a lot of your Province> Nice area!

I live in Coldwater, Michigan and have more of these things than I know what to do with. Ask away and get answers.

Welcome to the group of nut Cases , or was that Case nuts . I can never remember . The big wheel tractors are amazing beasts . Tell us about yourself , ie, your skill set , tools and shop you have at you disposal . This will help the members advise you on maintenance and repairs .
As you know the tractor is 40 years old and being new to you , there are some things other than what you mentioned to look for .
If you have not done so already .
Pressure wash all old dirt and oil top to bottom so you can check for leaks .
Change the rear axle , hydraulic , and engine oils .
Do a compression test for base line .
Check the clutch air gap.
Check the brake band for wear , delaminating , and adjustment .
Check front wheel bearings.
Pull side covers on the engine and check for oily dirt build up on the fins .
Make sure the oil filter Air seal is there if not Buy one the a re cheap and will save the valve seats.
You already mentioned the steering parts .
Like all things 40+ years old , it going to need a little love .
But a little love now will bring great joy later.
What attachments do you have and what are your plans for the tractor ?

It is nice to see another one saved .

Dave

Hi Dave. Ummm, Well... I 'm 58 in a month, I grew up on a farm milking cows before and after school, a short stint in the military, spent 32 years as a tool and die maker/designer, now I am a self employed Timber framer. Obviously, I live on a rural property, I have a 32x48 work shop, I just bought a small saw mill to play with in the off season, I go in the bush every winter to cut my own firewood which heats my home. I deer hunt in the fall and I enjoy target shooting on my back yard rifle range. Not your typical Canadian as I don't care for hockey or any other sport save golf which I will play a couple times a year.
For this tractor, I plan to use for pulling my lawn roller as it is too heavy for my belt drive Kubota lawn tractor. Also I will use it for toting the log splitter, utility trailer and what ever else. For bigger jobs I have a Kubota B2650 with a loader that has a box scraper on it all summer and a snow blower on the three point hitch all winter.
I don't have any attachments for the tractor and the first thing I'd like to get is that rear lifting hitch. Other than that, A total rebuild would be in order.

Yep, professional sports is like porn, those who can do it, those who can't watch  Although I like hockey, tune in a game on the clock radio by the bed and I am out in less than 10 minutes ;)

@steadfast hoe far are you free Toronto? There was a guy in Uxbridge selling all kinds of Case parts, I can ask him if he has a sleeve hitch if that's what you're looking for.

This is what he said "Hi, all is well here hopefully the same for you. Sorry I do not have one, I’ve got a bunch of hydraulic lines and 2 gas tanks left and a few steering components. I have sold everything else. "

Checked my parts tractor and have the main part of the sleeve hitch. The bar connecting it to the hydraulic actuator is missing but fairly easy to fab. It's a spare for me, looks like you need it more than I if you want it.

It's missing the lift lever extension and lift arm.

Steadfast , you are defiantly part of the meen age group . With your back ground a lot of it will be pretty easy once you access the service manuals .
The big wheel tractor are know for being abused because they can do so much. That being said there is a could things you need to look at . The rear axle carrier bolts can snap . These should be replaced with new grade 8 - 3/8" unf bolts and locking nuts loc-tighted in place . Also have a close look at the frame where the rear trans axle bolts on for cracks . Very fixable but may need attended to . I call on some of other members that maybe have pics of these issues so you can make short work of them . There are member that have Case / Colt tractors as old as you and I . I myself am rebuilding a Case 446 right now, have restored 222 and Frankie a 446 loader on steriods . Happy hydro's :creeper:

@Eugen and @steadfast If you guys make a deal on the sleeve hitch I could pick it up from Eugen and bring it back to Ayr. I will also be working near Belmont about 15 minutes form London this week and in Windsor sometime in the next 4 weeks when parts arrive. Eugen knows the drill.

As far as the differential bolts go, they are available through Speanur in Kitchener. I replace them as standard procedure when doing a restoration. Wheel seals are also available through local bearing suppliers.

Steering sectors have shims that that can be flipped and will tighten the fit up a bit "sometimes:. The sectors are the same on 200 series tractors that often haven't seen the hard life that 400 series have seen.

This was my first attempt at a full restoration.

Just 10,000 reasons why the 646bh restoration isn't finished.

Hi Dave. Thanks for everything. I contacted a parts dealer in Michigan and ordered a sleeve hitch. Apparently the Tractor frame was made longer in '78 and there are two different part numbers. Also will be contacting a guy named Dan Haas as he makes the front axle pivot pins.
Where are the rear axle carrier bolts? Picture...

Here's a link from the old group about the carrier bolts and some of the damage that can be done. others have had the sheered off nut and bolt catch between the bottom of the gears and the housing. This busts out the housing, but they are cast steel NOT cast iron so can be relatively easy to welded.

Here's a link showing the common breaking point of the frame on the 4xx's.

I have to thank you guys for mentioning the carrier bolts, as I never checked or replaced them on any of my tractors. Does anyone know what the torque should be on these bolts? Or do you use typical table values like 180 lbs for "lubricated conditions" of 5/8 bolts UNF ?

@steadfast glad you found sources for the items you were looking for already.

3/8 x 24 unf grade grade 8 bolt should be about 50lbs. torque . That being said it uses a lock nut so there needs to be allowance for that . I know it is in the manuals somewhere . Which of course is on the other computer , and that old thing take 4 hrs to boot up .
