Colt Case Ingersoll Garden Tractors

Greetings! A couple of people had told me about this forum... and here I am,

I had posted in a few places that my 446 was missing the heat shields / baffles. I found a set of tin work from an earlier style Onan that I can make work - Thanks Ross!

A bit about me... recently retired, Heavy Equipment Mechanic trying to stay out of mischief and keep my self occupied - Last year I purchased an '84 446 package deal - tractor with sleeve hitch, mower deck, rototiller, single bottom plow, cultivator, snow/dirt blade and snowcaster... I also added a 48" boxblade from Princess Auto. The intended end use for all of this fun stuff is 10 acres of hardwood bush. We purchased land in the Lanark Highlands near Ottawa 18 months ago with the intention of selling our house in the city and moving to the "woods" to really enjoy retirement. It seemed to take forever, but we finally got plans and permits approved and hopefully construction of a house and garage will start this spring as soon as the snow is gone and the frost is out of the ground (last spring it was early May).

My other tractor project is an antique '65 Case 530CK loader backhoe that is temperamental as all heck and leaks from every orifice of its old creaky body... I'll be working on it as time allows and using it for work on the property (foundations / Septic system and other fun projects)

Of course I do like working on all kinds of stuff and have a couple of Suzuki 4x4's (Samurai's and older) from the '80s that are slowly rusting away but refuse to die mechanically...

And tools... yeah, I have a few... or a few too many depending on if you talk to my wife first

Looking forward to getting inspiration from other peoples projects and sharing stories of my adventures (On the appropriate boards of course)

@RoamingGnome Gerry . Welcome aboard . I would say from your back ground , we can learn as much from you as you from us and have good time in the process . and I made our move to rural digs 10 years ago . Best thing ever done . As you know you machine is all most 40 years old . There are some things that you will want to address so it is a reliable fun machine to use . You said you have been on other sites and have picked up the missing tins for the motor . If you could list what you are already planning to do we can fill in the blanks on what else you should look into . Adventure/ misadventures in tractors is always welcome .

Welcome to our forum Gerry, nice to see you here. I like your tractors! Looks like you got a great package with the 446. I got myself a bigger loader backhoe too, a 1977 Case 680e that I've been fixing on various things and still needs work. I'm looking forward to your tractor adventures, hope you share your experiences!

I'll be sure to share the tales of various tractor "adventures" as time permits The big job this winter is packing / purging household junk and getting ready for the big move in the spring and making sure the 446 is ready for snow plow / blowing duties as required. Hamilton seems to miss most of the big storms and most of the time lake effect snow is going in the opposite direction (sorry Buffalo) I am looking forward to having a mechanical advantage over the snow when it finally does arrive.

I did a bit of work to the blade - spun the cutting edge, built up the bottom of the skid shoes (they were worn to a wedge shape and had holes in the bottom) and a quick modification - replaced the swing lock pin with a spring loaded one. The snowcaster is a work in progress, it looked like previous owners had fed it a lot of gravel and I've spent a bit of time straightening out the rolled over edges of the auger, I also found the shouldered lift bushings were broken - I've made replacements but will be ordering new bushings and a tension spring - hopefully before we get our first big dump of snow...

@RoamingGnome Gerry , have you checked the auger for being straight ? These snow casters work best when the auger is as close as possible to the housing , but that cause slack in the drive chain . The newer models have chain adjustment on the jack shaft bearing . I think your's is new enough to have that adjuster. I have an older model so use guides to take up the slack . Many guys have had great luck adding rubber wipe to the throwing paddle to in crease throwing distance .

Last year, I nearly bought a place in Lanark Highlands, with 65 acres. I lost it and it's still a bit of a sore spot. Post lots of pictures so I can still enjoy it vicariously.

I will add that as the snow casters progressed over the years, one of them changed the chain tensioning by having 3 holes in the chassy for the top bolt of the bearing on the small sprocket. A newer version changed the 3 holes to a radiused slot, with a eye bolt and end cap on the chain guard. The eye is on the top bolt,with the other end going through the end plate. One of the guy's on the old group did this mod to his older caster.

Also some guy's have swapped out the small 16 tooth sprocket for a 19 tooth, to increase auger speed and throwing distance.

Another mod: Some have recognized the the chute is on the short side and has a awful sharp bend in it. So they have picked up chutes from JD and Ariens and modified them to fit the Case.
