Onan oil heater

right side / dip stick side of pan I have .
Depending how thing work out I may put the heater in the base of the dip stick and leave the drain as is if it works out .

I think I would do it that way too.
As long as it doesn't interfere with the dipstick.

Synthetic oil has a more stable viscosity with temperature variations compared to conventional oil and will flow better at low temps allowing for easier winter starts. I'm not sure if you guys are already running synthetic oil. Just throwing this info out there.

I have 5w30 full synthetic in the Onan, but reg 15w40 rotella in the hydraulics. The synthetic definitely helps, started at 2°f a couple weeks ago, but it would make me feel better if I could plug it in for a little while.

I also run 5W30 full synthetic in my Vanguard. In my hydraulic system I am running 5W40 full synthetic year round. Got tired of changing it spring and fall. Seems to work just fine with my Hydravac in the summer despite discussions on the old forum saying it doesn't. I did top it off with a quart of 20W50 full synthetic last summer. My tractor starts just fine in the winter especially with the new 350CCA battery but it's also around 20°F in my attached garage.

@MattA here's my Onan B43M in a 226 that I sold at -14C/7F after sitting for a week. That tractor always started on a dime.

90% percent of engine ware is during cold start up unless it runs low . If I can better protect it by warming it up a bit before using it , I feel better about it . I know I feel better being warmed up before working

That's my exact thought Dave, go plug in, couple cups of coffee while warming up.
I can already see the toll the cold starts are having on the hydraulic hoses. Most of the low pressure hydraulic lines on 4118 have started weeping and dripping this winter. Being 30years old has nothing to do with it.

Dredging this old thread up, tis the season and it's been on my list for a while but I'm so far behind on my list. @DavidBarkey did put one of these in? Just checking before I order one.
