OLD Onan used to be on a welder

Guys, I found an old CCK looking engine that used to be on a welder. It was on a Lincoln welder by the red paint, but the armature of the welder went bad. Would this be a suitable engine to swap into my 646? It has no starter, as the welder started it. It also has an interesting ignition on it that appears to be a magneto instead of a coil. Also, it doesn't have an oil filter, very odd. Let me know what you think!------Metalguy

Metalguy, that is similar to the one I have. do know the governor balls would have to be changed to get the 3600 rpm from the engine that you would want for a GT. :peace: Harry

@metalguy . That is the same engine that is in Frankie . 446 Snow Blower tractor has a Emeral 4000 genny engine . That being said . What you have is a short block with a tappered shaft . You will need to do what I did to the genny engine . Read this . viewtopic.php?f=6&t=539&hilit=genny+engine&start=10

I also converted a lincon welder short block to use in a 448. I turned a tapered shaft down to 1", changed the governor balls, and used a Case pan. Case uses a deeper pan and tins than welders and generators. Also dipstick is in a different location.

What is really odd about this one is that it has a straight, large shaft. I'll try to get pics today if possible. I have one with a tapered shaft that I got as a shortblock (reman) in my other 646. What I did with that one is I bored a taper to match in the lovejoy connector. Works great, and easier (to me) than removing the crank, and machining it straight. Those of you that have used an engine like this, did you keep the magneto set-up, or just convert it to coil?

The P220 is tapered lovejoy to match crank and the RV genny engine is remachined . Both do work if done properly .
the P220 welder engine has electronic ignition (factory onan ) , the RV genny engine is points . I have never seen an onan with magn ignition . A large straght shaft ? Wounder if it is a big block 60 cid (1000 cc ) . Do you have a 16/18 hp onan head gasket that you can see if matches the bolt patter on the head ?
Can you show a picture of this magneto set up .

I'll go out and take some pics today, and post them here. I have never seen this set up, and it appears to be very old. It has points, in a raised box, but no coil, and the plug wires go insisde the tins towards the front fan area. Very strange. ------Metalguy
