Tire tubes.

Post by JSinMO »

This tire has had a slow leak since I brought the tractor home. I had a look at it this morning hoping to plug it. Nope it’s in the sidewall.

I guess sitting flat in the dirt for years didn’t do it any favors. I’m gonna stick a tube in it and see how long it last.
Might go for a long time yet.

With a tube you'll get another 20 years!

Nuthin wrong with tubes. But I get get mine from a small engine shop. They have the most turn over in tubes, so it will be the newest. I got one at Canadian tire years ago. Didn’t last to long rubber was going bad. Some places that sell tubes, they could be sitting on the shelf for years.
Just my thought. :106:

Good point. They have some on Amazon but like you said who know how long they have been laying around.
I’ll probably get one from the local farm store next time I’m by there. At least then I know what shelf it’s been sitting on.

Tubes like tires have pressure / weight ratings . Lawn mower tubes wont hold up a loader with weight on the bucket . There are small road trailers with smaller tires like what you have and the tubes for those will be stronger .

That’s a good point too. Poking around on the internet all I’m seeing are tubes rates for atv, lawn tractors, and golf carts. Finding a heavy one may take a little research.

Maybe check, let’s say with Vermeer or a company like that, that make heavy equipment for forestry or ground engaging, that are hauled like a trailer. They should have heavy duty tubes or set you in the right direction to get one.

Look for one rated for Highway use in your tire size .

My wife went to town today. I jokingly told her if she was close to tractor supply to pick me up a tube and gave her the size. She never gets tractor or shop stuff. I’ll be darned if she didn’t come home with one.

I don’t think it’s highway rated but I’m gonna try it.

Thought I’d finish this up tonight. I took the wheel off and put it up on the bench. The outside bead came off easy.

The inside bead though, good grief it was stuck. I pried on it, beat on it, used the backhoe on it. Would not come loose. I was ready to throw it in the trunk and take it to the tire shop, but I kept going. Finally came loose. The rim looks pretty good.

A little dish soap, and a lot of baby powder and the tube went in, the tire was on and the wheel was back on the tractor. Now we’ll see if that tube is tough enough to hold up.

I’ve worked on tractor tires of all sizes over the years. Some so big it’s better to leave the rim on the tractor and small fronts like this, I think they all wind up being cussed at the same amount!
Hopefully this ends the tire ramble.
