Stihl MS 460
Hi guys, some of you know a lot about chainsaws. This Stihl MS 460 came up for sale nearby and I'm thinking of getting it. What thinks you?

I was hoping you guys say "go for it, don't miss it, it's amazing, tell your we said so!!!"
yeah, I checked out opinions on the net, seems like a good saw, it'll do for me cutting twigs around the yard and such until I can find a bigger one

I think it's more than big enough. It would probably be good if you were going to use it for milling your logs.
My brother in law and nephew work for an equipment dealer that is a Stihl dealer. When I was talking to them about buying a new saw, their suggestions/recommendations on what saw for me turned into quite a discussion between a MS251 and a MS362. The youngster went for the bigger saw.

Really, I’m not very knowledgeable on saws. And I don’t like 2 stroke stuff, saws or what ever. I’m sure if you took 3 or 4 saws from 4 different brand name saws, they would all cut wood and work about the same.
Then when your done with them, they leak bar oil every where. Just my opinion.
I just don’t have good luck with saws.

@Eugen the 460 is a great pro saw. About as small as you'd want to go for milling but would work. A nice size felling saw and would be a beast for firewood duty.
What's the asking price? Did you pick it up?

Re: Stihl MS 460
With all that wood that came your way, can you afford not to like 2 stroke stuff? I"m with you on the leaky bar and chain oil, my homelites both make a mess wherever I put them.Propane57 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 26, 2022 6:14 pm Really, I’m not very knowledgeable on saws. Re: Stihl MS 460
This morning I sent you a PM @Chad when I was on my way to see it, hoping you say something like this. I did some quick searches and opinions were favourable to this model. So I went to look at it, and it had some minor cosmetic issues, but it started right away and it seems to work well. He was asking 550 which, for this size saw and working it seemed to me like an acceptable price, so i got it, with milling in mind (that's right @Timj !). I have 4 more ash trees to bring down, but the Homelite would have handled them too. As I said, I tried a long cut on one of the ash logs with the Homelite and about 75% of the way my right forearm was just about to fall off. Either my arm is too weak for that sort of thing, or the vibrations were excessive, or both. The really funny thing is that I got the idea of making boards out of these logs cutting them without an Alaskan mill from a Russian guy on youtube, who was freehand cutting boards out of massive logs with his Stihl saw as it appeared with ease. Definitely didn't work for Eugen+Homelite XL-12.

Sorry @Eugen! Just saw your msg now. That's great, and a fair price for sure. Yes, it will be a huge improvement over your Homelite. Faster, safer, less vibes, etc. Also has adjustable oiler which is great for milling. What size bar is on it?
