Auger rpm speed test
Any way, quick ramble. I finally tested the rpm of the auger today. Who knows if it’s right or not. But it was mentioned in a post some where a while ago. I said I was gunna test it with my vibration tach. Never did it. So today was the day, but to start off, the battery in the Case 446 was dead. Hooked up the booster battery. Still won’t turn over. Begin to wonder what’s what. Was not to long ago that I charged it. So the booster battery was dead Hooked the cables to the LGT 165 Ford, tried the Case, was going within a half a turn I think. Any way some batteries to charge.
So back to the rpms. Engine at 3200 hundred rpms, auger at 2600 hundred. That’s what I found.
Having 10, maybe 11, tractors means 10 or 11 batteries to look after and replace. Makes me wonder at times. And tires. Jumpins, don’t get me started on that !!!

Re: Auger rpm speed test
I am getting about 3100 rpm with my optical tach. on the new engine in the 446 blower project . I haven't done a rpm test on it yet but will tomorrow to see what I get in comparison with the drive sprocket upgrade .Propane57 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2022 2:26 pm Any way, quick ramble. I know what you mean about batteries . Now can you imagine if they were are electric powered!

Re: Auger rpm speed test
Does anyone have the spec for what the rpms should be for the casters and mowers?
I know I've seen different numbers thrown around out there but I can't remember, and didn't write it down.

let's go, it's finally time to blow.

Re: Auger rpm speed test
Case 446
No load 3100 RPM
Caster load only (no snow) 3000 RPM
Auger 835 RPM
Done with optical tach. , reasonably accurate
RPMs by math based on diameter where top of belt sit in pulley and sprocket # teeth
Engine 3000 Rpm 4.5" pulley
Caster pulley 2250 RPM 6" pulley
Jack shaft gear 18T RPM 2250 (old gear 16T )
Auger 47T 862 RPM
A difference of less than 30 RPM
Tomorrow I will do test run on the snow bank again . Want it to soften up some .

Re: Auger rpm speed test
Based on my test today . I would say you are not getting an accurate reading off the caster . I suspect the chain is adding vibrations . If you give me the specs I can do the math . Is your jack shaft pulley orginale (about 6.5"in dia. ) ? What are the # of teeth on the shaft sprocket and the auger sprocket ?Propane57 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2022 2:26 pm Any way, quick ramble. What was the theoretical RPM of the auger with the old jackshaft sprocket?DavidBarkey wrote: ↑Tue Mar 29, 2022 2:02 pm Case 446

Re: Auger rpm speed test
Engine pulley about 6.5 “ outside. Hard to measure. It’s an electric pto, so don’t know if that’s different than a manual pto.
Jack shaft pulley is 6.5”.
Small sprocket on other end of Jack shaft is 16 teeth.
Auger sprocket is 74 teeth.

Re: Auger rpm speed test
Can you up load a pic. of the pto pulley . I want to see how far the belt ride down in the groove . And a pic. of the auger sprocket so I can see it in relaytion to the auger it self . 74 teeth that big compared to mine at 47 teeth.

Caster pulley 2250 RPM 6" pulley
Jack shaft gear 16T 2250 RPM
Auger 47T 766 RPM
Comparison
Engine 3600 RPM 4.5" pulley
Caster pulley 2700 RPM 6" pulley
Jack shaft gear 16T 2700 RPM
Auger 47T 919 RPM
Conclusion
with the 18T gear all I need to do is stay above 3000 RPM underload and will have Auger rpm close to wide open spec and will be in a better torgue
range for the converted Onan genny engine .

Re: Auger rpm speed test
yep, that's the whole point right? have a high speed auger at the rpm engine has highest torque! It'll be different for me with the 14hp kohler which probably has highest torque somewhere between 2200 and 2500 rpm.DavidBarkey wrote: ↑Tue Mar 29, 2022 4:29 pm
