RPM and hour meter gizmo

Post by Eugen »

Just got one of these gizmos for less than $20 on amazon.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B0818MLGHT

Supposedly you can set it up for a number of firing patterns. I set it at 1P2R on the 644 which is a spark every two revolutions, or 4 stroke 1 cylinder.

It already fogged up in one corner of the display even though it's supposed to be water resistant. The round battery cover on the back has a thin rubber ring that just doesn't fit well. I might run a very thin bead of silicone there.

Will post a short video if it showing rpm while the tractor's running. It also has a configurable service feature, like an hour count down.

Anyone else running something like this?

I have the same hour meter. Works ok now that I've got enough turns of wire zip tied in place around my spark plug wire. It's a little slow to respond to RPM change. Its likely just taking a bunch of RPM samples over time and averaging.

I've also got one of these still sitting in the box:

Haven't had time to install it yet.

I almost got that one because it looks like a proper dial plus. Then the thought of all that work needed to install it... just don't have much energy for that kind of thing these days.

BTW the manual on my gizmo says for 2 stroke pickup cablw gets wound around the spark plug wire and for 4 stroke around the coil. Mind you I read the manual after I put it on the spark plug wire myself.

My tach quit working at one point... I ended up tightly wrapping 5 turns of the sensor wire around the spark plug wire and using two zip ties to hold the sensor wire in place.

I got one of these or similar for Xmas. Tach, hour meter and temperature. Going to in stall it on the Case 224 some day. I have had a tach/hour meter on the Ford LGT165 for 17 years. It lets you know every 25 hours to change oil and lube. I find it a great thing.

@Propane57 what type hour meter were you running for so many years? That's impressive. I don't expect this gizmo I got to last very long.

But thanks for reminding me, I had another one not installed and now it made it on my newest project, the 444 barn find.

Hehe. After 17 years I can’t remember Eugen. But I’ll take a picture of it and the tractor today and post it a bit later.

Ok a few pictures of the rpm/hour meter and tractor. Tractor is kinda squeezed in so pictures not that great. But you’ll get the idea. So this rpm/hour meter also reminds you to change oil and lube the tractor, every 25 hours. It’s a great thing to have. In 17 years of use not a seconds trouble. I did at the time put clear scotch tape on it to help keep water out. Because I don’t know if water proof or not. 17 years ago at this time it was about $125.00.
