Case E60 Dump Cart

New addition to the collection... With many thanks to @Spike188 and his network of friends I was able to add an older Case E60 Dump cart to my growing collection of tractor treasures

Going through the manuals in the tech section here I was able to identify it as an earlier E60 version, because the axle support is welded to the box...

The Dump Cart is showing it's age, the floor of the box is heavily pitted and has a dozen or more small perforations. I will probably neutralize the rust and then paint the floor inside and out with Por 15 before adding a new layer of steel over top of the original.

The tires might be original too, judging by their appearance and the weather cracking. The size seems a little uncommon - (2 Ply, 4.30-8 - almost look like wheelbarrow tires) The axle shaft is also a very beefy 1" diameter - Haven't taken a wheel off yet, - Does anyone know if Case used bushings or bearings in these wheel hubs? Since the trailer was originally rated for 1000 lbs I'd like to fix it up to reliably carry something close to that again. Seems like most yard carts have a 5/8 or 3/4 axle - Browsing the internet last night I didn't find any replacement wheels that used 1" bearings. I didn't have any luck finding tires or wheel assemblies with a 500 lb rating

Decided to try hooking up the cart to Maxine (our 222) but realized I had out smarted my self. The 2" receiver hitch was made for moving "real" trailers around the yard and I wasn't feeling like crawling around on my knees fiddling with a pin bracket under the new receiver hitch.

The weather gods were smiling today, :worship: it finally stopped raining late this morning. - Time to hit the BigSky shop and fab up a 5" drop hitch for "little" Garden Tractor trailers

Gerry,

The wheels if original have bushings, not needle or roller bearings, seem to hold up well. I think that someone has installed wheelbarrow tires as you mention, and they will not carry the load the the car is capable of. I think that you should look at trailer tires for highway service such as would be used on a small snowmobile trailer. They would be the same type of tire used on the front of the 644/646 tractors and can carry over 1000 lbs just fine.

Nice fab job on the hitch, by the way.

@myerslawnandgarden - Thanks Bob for confirming my suspicions - I was pretty sure they had to be bushings as there didn't seem to be enough room for any sort of bearing. I'll check around for small trailer tires and see what I can find. Think I'll go with a wider tread, the trailer is eventually going to end up at our property in the woods - those skinny wheelbarrow tires would disappear pretty quick when the ground gets muddy.

Congratulations! Even though it needs a little work it still looks pretty nice. I can’t help with specifications, but I do know your miles ahead with this trailer as opposed to one the box stores currently sell. Theses old ones are much better built. The hitch looks great, nicely done!

Nice cart Gerry. The rusty floor is probably still stronger than a new trailer. Neat that it has places for stakes on it.
Looks great.
I think Massey Ferguson had heavy built trailers like that. Ford too.

Paint was finally dry on the drop hitch this morning so I hooked up the trailer and did some yard work. Really happy with it, even if it has a rusty floor and questionable tires.

A lot more fun (and easier) than using a wheelbarrow, and I can see how it will be easier to wiggle in and out of tight spots when it gets up north to the property.
Thanks again for the comments - @propane1 - Noel... no problems at the moment with the rusty floor - I'm sure I've seen some older MF branded trailers on Marketplace that looked quite similar :)
@JSinMO - I've got one of those big box store trailers up north - Glad it was used and really cheap because there is a world of difference in the construction of the two. Everything about the Case trailer feels like it was a much heavier construction.

Even got to move a "real" trailer around... so much easier using the 222 with the yard being so soft from all the recent rain.
I did notice a few quirks about Maxine while running her today... :45:
She definitely needs new engine mounts :headbash: and the travel linkage really binds in both directions coming out of Neutral. :pullhair:
A few more things to fix while it's in the yard and all my tools are handy... Now to order some parts... :((
