Case 195 - 44 mower deck

Post by RoamingGnome »

When using my 195 to cut grass I for the first time I discovered a few little things needed fixing / adjustment, thought I would make a post for it...

The attachment lever wouldn't latch into the "up" position. Poked around and found the height adjustment rod wasn't in the right place, it's possible when going on/off the trailer the deck might have pushed up too far towards the tractor. The "L" shaped adjustment rod stop was now behind the lever instead of in front of it, blocking the lift lever from pulling all the way back and locking into the notch. :headbash:

Backed off the stop nuts (found a parts manual later and it's supposed to be a wing nut) and tried to wiggle it back into position. Just wasn't going to move back into place.

Out came the Milwaukee 12V cordless zipcut

Looks like the "hook" part of the rod has lots of wear...

and I cut the rod and fished the "hook" part out of the block with a small magnet

Going to fab up a new rod from a suitable 3/8" bolt and install it later.

Also thought the deck was very wibbly/wobbly and loose on the support linkages

- looked closely and there is enough play that the rear rollers almost touch the back tires - not so good.

Pins and slots in the brackets are very worn and need a little building up.

Also remembered I need to make a latching lever for the park brake to be able to lock it in the on position :106:

More photos when the deck is off and the support brackets have been fixed up... ;)

I'm not familiar with this tractor but that deck looks awful close to the rear wheel.

With every tractor I got there was work to be done, slowly issues get fixed and then, when it's almost working great, another tractor shows up and off you go and start again

Glad you fixed it quickly and can enjoy the tractor!

When you reinstall your deck be sure to level the deck front to back. With the blades pointed front to back I usually set the front edge of my blades about 1/8" lower than the back. If you do the reverse, the blades will be cutting the grass twice which causes the engine to do more work. The manual for your deck probably has a procedure. Also I'm doing this on a 4000 series... I assume the 195 has these adjustments.

Yes, it's gosh darn close - that picture was taken with it twisted as far as possible - on the other side the deck was a 3" or more away from the tire. It kinda flops around like a wet noodle :))

@MattA - Good point about levelling the deck, when I have finished taking up the excess play I'll park tractor and deck on a 4x8 sheet of plywood and make my adjustments, - don't have a driveway or garage and there isn't a flat, level spot anywhere in the yard :))

Thanks,
Gerry
