Wish me luck!!!
Well I am just the lucky guy I am. My 2 year old crate linamar 20hp engine that has 60 hours on has an enormous amount of fine silver in the oil. A knock when cold and gone when warm. What's the chances the whole thing doesn't need a full rebuild. I thought the oil change in the spring looked off. I have to get this fixed. Too much going on to have to worry about it. I do have a 16hp that's on a project tractor I may need to pull and install on my current ride. That way I can find time and what's going on. End ramble. Feel better now

Wow, only 60 hours. That is a head scratcher and a head banger. I wonder what got missed during manufacturing.

well that Sucks with a capital "S". I'd be sick. Hopefully you find something "not too major" when you take it apart.
When you are a "lucky guy" like most of us, there always has to be an issue.
Good luck and let us know what you find.

@Jancoe Do a compression test before you pull it so know how your ring/bore and valve/ seats
Hope it is nothing to major

@Jancoe hopefully it doesn't need a full rebuild. If you don't feel loss of power and you see no smoke it can't be really bad right?

An engine with 60 hours knocking, that sucks
Im hoping it’s just a bad bearing. Let’s us know how it turns out.

I'm trying to make sense of why the knocking goes away when the engine is warm. The knock can be ignition related but given the metal debris in your oil this is unlikely, or main crankshaft bearing related. I don't have experience with this but I found at least one report where the main bearing is worn out and causes knock when the engine is cold.Jancoe wrote: ↑Sun Nov 20, 2022 3:40 pm Well I am just the lucky guy I am. Whatever the actual cause of the knocking, there is no way to avoid disassembly, IMHO. When you take it apart you'll find out the real cause. Good thing that you have an engine you can use, but it sucks to be forced to replace an engine now.

Re: Wish me luck!!!
Possibly a cracked piston skirt . Knocking because of excessive movement when cold . But as heats expands and crack opens up flaring the piston skirt tight against the cylinder causing excessive wear on alum. piston ( "silver in oil " ) and the knock to go away . Only ever seen it once and it was a low hour eng. with a defective piston casting .Eugen wrote: ↑Mon Nov 21, 2022 2:10 pmI'm trying to make sense of why the knocking goes away when the engine is warm.
