JD 1025 hanging with the wrong crowd

This is in response to
@Propane57 and his post, Case 224 deck trouble and In the shade. And some work.
A year ago this JD1025 with less than 700 hours of operation was dropped off with a broken deck driveshaft. The operator was engaging the deck at full throttle which eventually snapped the U-joint. The deck U-joints are JD only and also expensive but a fairly straight forward repair. The lights on the roll cage are $150 each and made of plastic. It only takes one hit by a tree branch to wipe them off and had been replaced twice. The lights had 4 mounting holes but the roll cage was only drilled for 2. Extra holes were drilled to make use of the alternate light mounts and one set of broken lights was reused. A 1/4" X 3" flat bar was formed and welded on the the cage to protect the lights. After finishing the repairs a power steering hose was found to be leaking. I was surprised because the tractor was manufactured after 2013 . The hose is a JD special that was not in stock at the dealer 2 miles from me. The selling dealer about 45 minutes away had experience with these hoses and stocked the JD end and was able to make one.
It is unfair to compared to the pack of tractors that call this place home with the JD.
I have spent many hours learning the wear points on CCI tractors. These well over a thousand hours each and show less deck lift point wear than the JD. The JD currently has a leaking plastic diesel tank. Am I wrong in thinking that the JD will not make it to 40 years like the 448, 4016, 446, and 646. Will anyone even attempt to rebuild it when it hits 30 years and looks like the line up beside it.
A side note is that the drive over decks that came with this JD1025 were recalled because they could not support the weight of the tractor driving over them during install and removal.

Just a great write up Spike. This JD 1025R, that I bought, hehehehe, only had less than 400 hours on it. And a 2016, I think. I only looked at for a few minutes and could see small things I didn’t like. Key switch needs replacing and the owner agreed. I have wondered how long these sub compacts would last.
I have a John Deere garden tractor. It’s a 1970. 52 years old now. I use it for snowblowing and can if I had to, use it for grass cutting. Hehe. Which I may have too the way things are going. Any way, I am the third owner. Motor has been done twice. It really has more hydraulic functions on it than the 1025R. Has two ports out front and one out the back. It has split rear brakes. Like a real tractor. And has a cigarette lighter. Hehe. At 52 years old. It could have a lot of hours on it. So this JD tractor I have is a 140H3.
I just cut my grass today with. A 1971 Massey Ferguson 7. 51 years old.
Now, all garden tractors need work. There’s no to ways about it. But in 50 years will these JD1025r’s be around. They should be, but hard to say.

"They don't build them like they use to " rings true. I don't think you will see it going at 30 - 40 years old. Don't expect to see our New Holland going either. I think long before then you will not be able to get critical parts that can't be worked around and they will end up in the scap.

Yes great write up.
As much as I love to hammer on John Deere it’s not just them these days. Look at any tractor made today I don’t care who made it. I highly doubt it will be around in 40 years. Now look at a tractor made 40+ plus years ago any major manufacturer and from GT to full row crop. There is no question the build quality and material used was better. I have a tractor that is 83 years old. It starts easy and can work all day. And as a bonus it’s easy to work on when it needs it.
Unfortunately new equipment just like most things today is made with specific service life then it’s done.

Yes JSinMO good to have an old tractor. I have a 1951 Ferguson TEA20 tractor. Great old tractor.

The saying " they don't make them like they use to " is true because of designed obsolescent . The mandate of all engineers working for corporations is to design fluff , cheaply with a designed self destruct timeline . Automotive is 7 years . Compact tractors is 10 years and lawn mower are 5 years now . Sad but true .

Yep, pretty sad, I was at the collection site a couple weeks ago, three lawn tractors sitting on the edge of the scap pile, one probably fifteen year old MTD, other two bookend Craftsmans, definitely well less than 10yrs old, looked "new".
I just have a hard time with this "throw away" mentality.
