Another Simplicity followed me home, didn't need it but it has the rare as hens teeth power steering :spin: I already pulled the engine to remove the tins and mouse nest and power washed it, and replaced the leaky oil pan gasket and carb rebuild.
image.png
The front axle did not look right so pulled it, That is supposed to be a 1/2" hole :headbash: Apparently the bolt came loose long ago :violin:

Studs and lug nuts installed on rears, one side was easy but the other hub had to be removed because of the differential being so close.
image.png
Working on the mower deck the tensioner was rusted solid. Took most of the power of the 12 ton press to get it a part. Then drilled a hole and welded a nut on for a zerk.

Yesterday I got it moved to the barn and made a few parts. The 1/4" thick washer and the smaller short pipe.
image.png
Today, Nut and washer welded to back of frame. If the bolt loosens in the future it won't tear threw the 1/4' thick frame again ;) The washer will strengthen the frame and give me something to weld to from the front side.
image.png
Before welding the bottom of the hole was filed out a bit more to fit the small pipe.
image.png
image.png
Welded, ground flat and bolt test fit.

The end of the wishbone needs to be welded and made round again.
image.png
Not sure what todo with the wishbone mount, it is cast iron so not weldable with what I have.
image.png
The hood hinge is over simplified, simple holes in flat metal with a bolt, this leads to wobbled out holes.
image.png
The fix weld nuts to inside of hood so bolt can be double nutted and no vibration.
image.png
Nut welded to outside of frame then drilled threads out to act as a broader hinge point.
image.png
Out of welding gas so done till next weekend ;)

Might be easier to fab one from 1/2" steel plate?

Nice welds by the way :worship:

Hard to tell in the picture, but that cast part is 1.25" tall. Had the wife run up to my Simplicity dealer today and got one ordered. But he has had issues getting parts. He said B&S bought out Simplicity awhile back, and now B&S is hurting and may be sold. So we will see. worst case scenario I could flip the casting, put the worn side down.

Was NOT a good day to be welding outside with a MIG, very gusty. The grinder with cut off wheel got some work in grinding out spong weld :headbash:

Steel pipe welded to plate with oil-lite bronze bushing pressed in side machined to fit . That is how I have remade similar pieces before .

Well the casting is not even shown in the parts manual :7: So picked up some E-316 welding rods, holy crap they are pretty proud of that stuff, 13 rods $37.oo after tax. Fixed the casting.
SAM_0942.JPG
There was plenty of extra space on the wishbone, so built up the weld for more bearing area.
SAM_0944.JPG
Got the hole and rod round and straight again on the axle.
SAM_0941.JPG
Back on all 4's again. During assembly I gave the load bearing surfaces a good coat of synthetic caliper grease.
SAM_0946.JPG
Also got the power steering unit swapped out, as this one has a leaking seal.Tomorrow I'll add hydraulic oil and fire it up :please: Hope nothing else needs attention other than the bad headlight. :please:

Not to hijack your thread Gordy but I got my hands on my first simplicity yesterday. It was given to me the other day. A neighbor down the street said it just wouldn't start one day and wants it gone. Free. Not as cool as yours but I have been wanting to get my wife a mower because she refuses to ride ingersoll's.Image

My wife is the same way. But because she is used to the Simplicity, the controls on a CCI are mirror image of the Simplicity. She found out the the lift lever did NOT slow the Ingersoll down as she approached a tree :headbash:

 I don't get much practise, there is a reason most of the pictures only show the welds after cleanup  But I had about 15 years factory welding under my belt before I went into construction as a heavy equipment operator in 2001. That was mig and tig, very little stick. It is strange going from mig where you see what you are putting down, to stick welding where the weld is covered in a puddle of flux and you just hope it turns out decent. The biggest issue with welding is cleanliness. I have worked on a couple neighbours tractor loaders, grinding out the kitchen sponge welds that broke. Because someone thought they could weld through paint and grease :headbash: I miss the welding emoji.

If anyone could describe the welding emoji because I honestly don't remember it, I'll take a stab at it :122:

My wife asked if she could drive my old 442 (lots of hills, no holding valve, practically no brakes) and I told her, "Trust me, you don't want to try."

The newer Ingersoll has a holding valve and way better brakes. She'd probably do fine on that. But she won't bother to ask now.

I got a mower just for her: a key start, rear wheel drive, self propelled Honda push mower. Nothing's too good for my girl!

It was on the other site. A smiley guy with a welding helmet that would flip down and strike an arch.

Well had a few small honey do items today. Then filled the hydraulic oil and connected the battery, turned the key and nothing :headbash: WIggled the wires on the back of the ignition switch while holding the key in the start position,it would crank intermittently as I wiggled the wires. Found rusty spades on the switch, cleaned them with a Q tip and Lysol toilet cleaner, rinsed and coated with dielectric grease, also cleaned female connectors in the plastic plug.
SAM_0947.JPG
SAM_0950.JPG
Reassembled, hit the key and still no go :headbash: While holding the key again I reached in to wiggle the wires again and bumped one of the wires on the amp meter and the starter engaged. It is the barrel slide on type of connector, the barrel broke at the crimp. Fixed that and she started up, went for a spin around the yard all good  Put the mower deck on and tested it  Then put the vac on :fight: tight fit on this tractor compared to the other :headbash: but got it mounted and tested, then :drink:

One way or another, I think every old tractor I got had either problems with the connection at the AMP meter, or the AMP meter itself. Good reminder to use dielectric grease on the contacts, which I have but not applied on the recently overhauled 244. Thanks @Gordy !

You're very fast, got this tractor up to speed in no time. Any videos in action? :D we like seeing 'em run!!! :smash:

Does not seem all that fast, I have had it for 5 or 6 weeks, but working 10 to 12 hour shifts 6 days a week cut into that time span. Had to work on it outside so rain days at work were non productive at home. Got laid off Thursday so plenty of time now weather permitting.

Video  I'm lucky to have figured out how to take still's and post them :40: Not to mention remembering to take them in the first place ;)

Several things to do yet. Need to put a tach to the engine, seems slow. And testing the vac last night, the headlight worked but the amp meter was very jumpy and the auto reset circuit breaker would trip. May be a hidden bare wire. On the plus side the engine had been swapped with an old BS with magneto ignition, so the tractor kept running :peace:

You posted it days ago and all of that work done day after day :D

Sorry to hear about Thursday, I pray it's a door opened somewhere else!

I get it about the videos, can be a pain. I installed a vimeo app on my phone, so it's easy to just take a video on the phone normally, and then I upload it to vimeo. Then I take the link and just paste it in the message. It's an extra step but I think people in general here like to see some video action too, I know I do! Anyway, not to worry, I appreciate taking us along with pictures just as well!

Good luck chasing that electrical gremlin! :fight:

I work seasonal construction as a heavy equipment operator so the lay off was just 2-3 weeks earlier than expected.

Got 18 bags filled with leaves before it started raining hard. Should have quit earlier, the deck will need to be pulled and cleaned I am sure it will be packed full :headbash: But was doing good in the on and off lite sprinkles, the last load was leaving as much on the ground as it put in the bag  Picture with the fist load on

That's a very old Simplicity vac, the blower housing is 2 shells of aluminum welded together. The impeller is 2 pieces bolted together to make a 2 bladed impeller. That sucker has a howl to it. Almost need ear plugs inside of the muffs :7: Plugging was a big issue, so I replaced as much of the old flex hose as I could with Cheap galvanised ducting. Almost no plugs now

Almost forgot :shh: Put the non contact tach to it engine was turning 3125 rpm's, got it adjusted to 3625 and called it close enough ;)
