Oh Deer you caught me....

Post by ras101 »

Well you asked and I am not one to lie either. yeah even though have 3 Case/Ingersoll tractors I also run a John Why Deer LX172 for grass cutting! Why? only because it has a bagger. I have a 1987 444 in my basement being totally rebuilt, a 1977 446 with 18hp B@S I use for snow blowing only, and a new to me 1979 446 that is new to me but with serious oil leaks too. I guess my love has, and always will be, Case/Ingersoll but it comes down to energy/times/age.

Everything has a place in one's life, and you know best what fits well in your life at any moment. Rest assured we will happily help you if your JD all the way to the scrap yard if need be :D

One type of tractor that appeals to me would have a heavy duty geared transmission. But no time or money to deviate from the Case world.

Thanks Eugen, My Deere is an 1990series LX172 with manual transmission. I hate driving it! much prefer my Case that to me feels so much easier to drive and in my opinion has more power. So why drive and own? only because it has a bagger and well has a deck that works. My 1977 Case 446 is primary my go to snow tractor complete with a 48 inch snow thrower and that's truly it! I modified my Case, it has a B&S 18HP Vanguard engine and electric PTO and that coupled with Hydraulics makes the Case invincible in y opinion. The power of the 18 HP engine (love a 20-24 hp though) does not bog down even with 18-24 inches of snow) coupled with the hydraulics of the Case 4 series GT is a thing to be envied. Love this combo. Now all I need is a Cab. I have been working on that and hope to make that a reality soon too.

Perhaps you could sell the JD and add a hydrabagger ? :)

Already working on that...bought another 446 from a neighbor at the beginning of the year with oil leak issues but planning that as my summer grass cutter.

Don't feel bad about the JD. I have some of the best equipment JD ever made dead weight, wheel and suitcase weights  I leave them the original colors so people will ask why and I can tell them that I am proud to own the best products JD ever made

I guess the JD 80 lawn cart is pretty good to. I used 1" x 12" pine to make side extensions for the cart, did the math and can get 2/3rds of a cubic yard in it. From online it looks like 2/3 yard of topsoil is about 1,400 pounds. I dug a ditch 200 feet through the woods to drain a low spot in the yard, then hauled the dirt to mosquito hatcheries that I could not get to drain.

It’s been 15 years ago and my 446 that was used for grass cutting had a problem. I was super busy working all kinds of overtime, so I purchased a brand spanking new cub cadet with a 46” mowing deck and a bagger. It has a 24hp Koehler engine that still runs great. It’s had a few minor issues but I just kept fixing it. This past winter I fixed up a 444 with a 321 Koehler engine and a hydra bagger. I used it on and off during the summer, but kept working the gremlins out of it. I like it mostly in the big wide areas and like the CC to cut around trees. Maybe the 226 that I’m currently working on will maneuver around the trees better than the 444.

I started to take off a few parts together the fuel tank off, clean it and replace the fuel line. The body parts are quite rusted from setting outside. I don’t plan on painting much mostly concentrate on getting the engine running. It wouldn’t turn over with the ignition switch, but did turn over by jumping the starter with battery cables. The engine oil was very black so I drained it and now I need a filter and oil. I’ve been working on the shop lighting and only have one more ceiling light to replace. Legs and feet have been getting a workout up and down the ladder.
