1976 446

Post by Harry »

This 446 is the first Case tractor I purchased. It was used by my son mowing my lawn for a good number of years. It had a few problems and finally it wouldn't start. Being very busy with my job and a busy family schedule I parked it and bought a riding lawn mower to take care of grass cutting.
It sat for about ten years in a building until I was ready to figure it out. After speaking with Boomer the Onan Master, I found out it was originally a B43 that had a B48 short block. It had dropped a valve stem keeper into the pan which I got lucky and fished out with a telescopic magnet. Boomer sold me a oil filter bracket and larger P series carb. After installing the keeper and new parts it ran great. Later I installed an electric fuel pump and a Kirk point saver, which is now a transdenser. It always starts in a few turns of the engine now. It had old style manual clutch so I transplanted an electric one. I found an old metal cab with plywood doors very reasonable and fabricated a hinge and brackets to attach it to the tractor. Replaced the chain on the caster which already had a 19 tooth sprocket on it. I saw on you tube about putting rubber wipers on the caster auger and installed some. It now is only used for snow removal at my house. Also picked up some wheel weights that add an extra 200 lbs to the rear. It's a pain to crank the chute so I purchased a rotator motor a linear actuator for the deflector which are on the shelf waiting to install hopefully before next winter.
I hope you all enjoy the pics.

Harry, it just goes to show, a tractor that sits there for so long, you give it the needed parts and maintenance and it'll serve you well another 30 years. Funny (in a way) that story about the valve keeper! To how many of us did that happen? I know it did to me. It was an old 16HP Briggs cast iron, someone put in a Case 220, which he made a small loader for. Uninspired me did the big screwdriver+magnet trick to take the valve springs off, except it didn't go accoring to plan, and one keeper just vanished. Gone. Manufactured my own solid copper wire with neodimium magnet to fish for it in the oil pan, and I just couldn't find it. Months later, I found it stuck on a magnet when I least expected.

Looking forward to your linear actuator mod!

Crazycase I was thinking of painting it some other color than black. But no one sees it much in the winter anyways. I use to do flames on my Harleys back in the day. In my shop I painted the walls with a Sherwin Williams DTM paint, direct to metal. I covered the walls in the welding area with galvanized sheet metal and this paint was perfect for the metal. It was a beige color and I found it on C/L as a closeout sale. Five gallons for forty dollars was dirt cheap for this industrial paint. I then made a stencil of a snowflake out of cardboard. Then used flat camo spray paint to make snowflakes on the walls. I call it snowflake camouflage, an area to induce creativity. I recently rearranged my shop with a lot of old kitchen metal wall cabinets. I painted all of them with the DTM paint and stenciled them before hanging them on the walls. Maybe I should post some pics of my shop and give members some ideas for their own shops.
