Just an observation on things for sale

I rarely see a case GT of any kind around this area much less one for sale. I’ve been paying more attention now that I own one. It’s like when you buy a car and then that’s all you see on the road!

I’m surprised at how many come up for sale up north. I realize it’s across a large area, but It makes me wonder why. Did more get sold up there? Did I just miss the boat around here? Maybe they weren’t as popular around here. I don’t know but it makes me feel more and more like I have a unicorn for this part of the world.

I think dealer availability played a big roll. If Case tractors were popular in the area and the dealership carried the gt's there were more sold in that area.
You are absolutely right, you can kinda tell by where members are from the areas with more tractors.

I surely agree. Can’t say I ever seen one for sale here. The 446 I got was next door neighbour. And have no idea where he got it. And the tractor and the snow caster with it are different years. The 224 I got was from a fella I know only 5 minutes or so away from me. His father had it years ago. And I have no idea how they got it.
Was a case dealer here in town, but don’t know if they sold them.
I only know of a possible 5 or so on PEI where I live. Oops 6. Just thought of another one. Any way, I have two of them.

Your 648 is kinda a unicorn no matter where you are from. I certainly would not worry about it. There were not that many made, and they don't come up for sale very often. The internet makes finding parts and help easier. Be proud of that nice machine. :highfive:
There seems to be a few CCI guys on the forums from the St Louis area. I do run into tractors for sale in that area and southwest IL while searching marketplace.

I have personally seen two Case/Ingersoll tractors in person ever.

And I bought them both. Oddly enough, I got them each for a STEAL of a deal.

I did see one other one on Craigslist about 15 minutes drive from here. But it was beat up and overpriced.

I say all that to say, "There are very few Case/Ingersoll GT's in the Atlanta area. Not non-existent, but very rare. For whatever reason."

Some of the guys here said is was rather rare when I joined here. I didn’t really realize it until I started looking. Im very happy to have it around, its handy! Even though at this point I’ve done more work on it than with it!

My job takes me all around the area from day to day, which is how I stumbled on to the 648. just hadn’t really thought about it. I’ve run into other equipment I now own that way. Pull up to a job, get to talking with the people, and the next thing you know I’m dragging something else home!

Now that I’ve said I never see them I’ll probably run into a few!

I own five and the last two people gave to me because they stopped working and probably they were tired of working on them. My 644lbh and 646 loader I found on C/L locally and the 446 snow machine I purchased from a co-worker years ago. While drving in my area I rarely see any for sale or people mowing their lawns with them. There was a dealer not to far away near Lake Ontario but they now selling Kubota's.

Keep the Peace :peace: :cop:

Growing up in a small town , you just didn't see them . everyone had push mowers . The only ones that had riders were the farmers . Both set of grandparents were rural but not farmers . One had a JD with snow blower for winter (1/4 mile driveway ), sickle mower and trailer for summer . The other had a Allis Chalmers rider mower with a trailer and garden implements. ( had a large veg patch) .
I had never heard of Case GTs before I bought the basket case that became Frankie . We had bickles, go carts, stockcars and hot rods . It was not until we moved to our house in the country 11 years ago where we are now that even given them a second thought . But now I repair and restore riders, GTs and small implements . :creeper: :))

Being from WI I would expect there to be more Case's around with Racine about 2 1/2 hrs away and Ingersoll 25 miles away in Winneconne. I see them in my travels and there's around 15 for sale within a 2hr drive currently. But I think I see more for sale in Michigan.
I grew up on a Simplicity, my dad still runs Simplicity and Allis Chalmers. A couple of uncles had Case. One uncle still has a 4023 and his son has a 4018.
When I bought my first home it had a large lawn and acreage. I set off one Saturday morning to the JD dealer to look at a couple of used larger gt's. ( I know :barf: what was i thinking) one was 5yrs old the other 10, sticker shock set in real quick. :40: and I only had so much to spend. So I left and took a ride over to Winneconne to see what the dealer had, and left with a deal on my 4118. It was a left over from the year before with 11hrs, they had been letting customers drive it around and using it to plow the sidewalk. I bought it with the AHRM48 deck, UB54 blade, HH34 three point, and wheel weights for less than the 10year old JD that only had the deck. :D

Great story Tim! You got a much better value than the JD.

Around here it's mostly the older models that go for sale, but I'm just fine with that. My 70's 644 and 444 do everything I need. The only thing I'd still want is a d100 backhoe on the back of the 644.

@Timj i can’t believe you passed up the chance to pay more for a green tractor and get less! :D. John Deere has one heck of a marketing department don’t they! I guess I can’t be to down on them. They do make good equipment, there just awful pricey.

You have me thinking of when I was a kid at home. We did have a local Case dealer and some guys did have Case equipment, in fact that is where my 830 came from, but they were a minority. You would see some Massey, Allis Chalmers, or John Deere, but at that time in our area International Harvester was most popular. Over the years John Deere has just about taken over ag in the area.

I guess it really makes sense that I don’t see many GT’s in this area. When I was a kid a lot of the adults had grown up during the depression and WW2. If they could get it done with what they had they wouldn’t buy something else. My dad always kept a garden. When it needed to be plowed under or disced he went to the shed and got the same equipment we used in the field. I don’t think he ever thought of having a smaller tractor for the garden or around the house. I think a lot of guy from that era were that way. Heck my grandfather bought a new Farmall M in the 1940s and we were still using in the 1990s!

I would have to assume around here anyway lower popularity and frugal farmers probably played a big part in the lack of GT sitting in barns today.

Noel is supposed to do the rambling around here and now it seems I’ve gone on a long one!
Anyway just some thoughts and remembering of how it used to be

Hehe. Great ramble JSinMO. I’d say your very correct on people not having money to by extra equipment when they already had some some to do the job, in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s some. Same way around here. Until it seems about the nineties. People started buying subcompact and compact tractors and the like. Kubota dealer here has all kinds of sub and compact tractor in stock to chose from. JD has some too. Kioti has good supply of tractors, But MF has nothing. Less dealers here now, and very little in used small tractors around now. Twenty years ago there was a good amount of dealers and used older smaller tractors for sale.

There now, not to bad of a ramble. :D

Good ramble @JSinMO and spot on. Years ago money was tight and people lived within their means. Even if you worked harder, as long as the job got done. Companies built things to last. Gt's were built like tractors, that's why they are so popular today.
The '48 8n my grandfather bought new is still going. For many years it was the families garden tractor.
The Simplicity I grew up on was about 10yrs old when we got it. A lady that had a weekend home in the area that my dad did some handyman stuff for gave it to him. Her grounds keeper had gotten to close to the edge and it rolled down a cliff along Lake Michigan at her home in Milwaukee. The dealership said it was junk and sold her a new one. My Dad straightened it out. That thing ran daily when I was a kid. It's been cannibalized now but the implements are still around.

Well fellas, I just can’t believe it. After starting this thread about never seeing tractors for sale, I found out today there is an auction coming up 10 miles from me with a boat load of Case tractors and equipment!

I came home and made my case ( no pun intended) too she who holds the bank book. At the very least I plan to attend the sale. Not sure what will happen from there. If nothing else I’ll try to get some pictures and sale prices.

The sale isn’t till September so I guess I need to work on scrapping what I can together.

Hehe. JSinMO I need a sleeve hitch for my 1982 Case 446. And a 48” mowing deck for my 1975 Case 224. Hehe.

 ya, you have to get a Case cash stash, which seems to be harder and harder to grow. :106: you must never let :wife: find out about. :114: or else :45: :70: :please: :fight:  :bla: :112: :((

Auctions seem to go three ways on these CCI tractors, if there's Case guys around they go about average price unless it's rare. If some uninformed unknowing person wants it it'll go high. The rest of the time auctions seem to the place to get a bargain.

If you go, you will find out how popular they are in your area. Collections will draw more from farther away versus a single tractor. Going is better than online bidding.
Good luck :highfive:

IF something were to come home with me it would be tractor number 7, so I can’t blame her for giving me a sideways look! However SHE has shown interest in operating one. She doesn’t go for my big tractors. But if she gets into garden tractors that would be great!

The gentleman holding the auction apparently was a large Case collector with all manor of tractors and equipment large and small with the big item being a 1916 Case automobile. This will probably draw a large case group. But you never know. On a limited budget I’d be hoping on a good price on a non running one that I can fix.
And yes I agree i want to be there to bid. I like being able to kick the tires, look in the gas tank, etc. online bidding doesn’t interest me at all. Half the fun of an auction is being there!

They don’t have the official sale bill out yet, but it sounds like all garden tractors come with mower decks.

We’ll see what happens!

We’ll this auction is a week away and I must say I’m getting excited to go. There are a few things I’m interested in. It’s going to be an all day affair, he has sheds full of Case equipment. Here’s a list of the GT equipment the gentleman is selling.

3 – Case 446 lawn tractors with mower decks
Case snow blower for 200 series tractors
Case 220-222 & 224 lawn tractors w/ mower decks (note 224 has bad motor)
Case lawn sweep
2 – Case front mount blades
2 – Case garden carts
Case hydraulic tiller

This is the only picture of the GT on the sale bill
11B9672E-2922-44CD-9758-7F4367E72555.jpeg
I been rolling numbers around in my head trying to decide where I want to be on price.
I’m leaning towards trying for one of the 446’s, but the 224 with the “bad motor” may be the deal of the day.

A 446 would probably be a handy little tractor around the farm and would be a good start to get your wife comfortable with tractors.
This auction will be a good place to find how popular they are in your area.
Good luck. :highfive:

I can think of a lot of things we could use it for around here. Do I really need another tractor? No but I guess when you get the fever you can’t help it! Oh well there are worse thing to do with your time! We used to go to tractor shows every summer, but I think our big tractors are just too intimidating for her. She’s never learned to use a clutch, and doesn’t want to. So something like a 446 would be perfect. I suppose time will tell!
