Colt Case Ingersoll Garden Tractors

I thinks that’s the most padded seat I’ve ever seen on an old tractor. I wonder if it came that way or it’s an add on.

An odd tractor today. Odd to me, but not to them. Different plowing opening. That was the second pass, Id say.

It is a rather odd tractor, at least it’s odd in its starting sequence. I believe it’s a single cylinder. You have to put smoldering paper into the bore and then use a shotgun shell and a hammer to get it started!
Must have pretty good torque, it’s pulling 3 bottoms.

Quite impressive that he can plow with a 8hp engine. A small blade width maybe?

I’m not sure Jeff on those. But that one maybe started with a crank that goes into the flywheel on the right side and not the shot gun shell. But I could be wrong. The other tractor I’m thinking of is a Lanz. It could be the one that uses the shot gun shell. But I could have them backwards. And yes single cylinder. 5.1 litre. Almost the same size as a 302 ford V8 5.0 litre.

I would think it would be a 10” plow Eugen. If not a 12”. More gradually turning of the sod, because of the long moldboard, could be making it easier to pull. A 10” brinly plow has a shorter moldboard which makes it more aggressive and not as easy to pull.
Just my take on it. I could be wrong.

Over time the definition of horsepower has changed greatly over the years. Like some of those huge steam tractors labeled at 6HP, 10HP or 15HP. And back then engines were generally slower turning torque monsters.

The Brinly moldboard plow is 10" and the configuration manual talks about 5-6" depth. To me that seems too shallow for a garden, and always try to make the plow go deeper, more like 8". There is a nice document from Michigan State University about how to match tractor power with implements, and they assume an 8" plowing depth. They have some tables in that document, and a couple of formulas to calculate stuff. For instance, let's try to calculate the drawbar HP required to pull a 10" plow like the Brinly. Let's assume a medium textured soil (loam) for which they give a draft value of 750 pounds per foot of width of the implement, which makes it 625 pounds for the width of 10". The formula is draft * speed / 375. Let's assume 2 miles per hour for our small tractors (they usually use 4 mph). This would give us 625*2/375 = 3.33 drawbar HP. Now, the question is, what drawbar HP does one of our tractors have? They also give a way to calculate that. For firm soil, they say a tractor gets a drawbar horse power available to the implement equal to 62.5% of the PTO horse power. My 444 therefore would be able to get around 14*62.5/100 = 8.75 DBHP. Which tells me that a 444 should be just fine to plow my garden. And it is.

Ha, sounds like that 8hp is a little of an underestimate. The Kohler K341 16HP is 588cc, close to the 0.6 litre Steed eh?
