Getting ready for $&@#

So on to this Case 244 to get ready for winter. Changed the oil and put air in one tire yesterday. Just have to take the deck off and put thrower on. Sounds easy right ! Hehe. Have to grease and lube stuff too.

Finished up the LGT 165 Ford yesterday.

More tractors, they say, more fun, they say! Until you have to get them all lubed, oiled, clean, and so on. :))

Not easy getting the thrower down off of that bench by me self. Getting to be a little to much for this old fella. Any way. It’s on the floor. I’ll continue. One troubles is, I have not seen the belt for it yet any where. :106:

Well well well, what a thing to get on the tractor. Jumpins I thought they were easy to do. :pullhair: Any way, it’s on and it lifts up and down, chute rod hooked up and all that works. Now if I could only find the belt. :106: :45:

Amazing. I found the belt. Put it on and tested thrower a few times on and off. Seems good. So this one is done. 3 more to do. This one is next. Only carb trouble here on it. :42: :45:

Lots. And need back up tractors. They are old. They break. And I need to have some thing to use. I can find more pictures.

Every year that goes by the less I like snow! You can keep that stuff up there. Good plan having multiple tractors ready for winter. Old things do break. I try to follow the idea that 2=1, 1=none, and having 3+ is better. I can feel the chill in the air around here. I guess I better get my 446 ready soon!

There now. I think I have the John Deere carb issue fixed. Will see when I have to use it. I think the main trouble was the needle sticking in the seat. Changed the filter. Didn’t seem dirty, but harder to blow thur than the new one. Put it’s a different type of filter. Put fresh high test gas in too.
I have have trouble with those paper type filters before. The Case 224 would not pull gasoline thru with the fuel pump. Put one of those white filters on and it worked fine.
Those white filters have a better screen in them than the same type red ones.

That's what we call N+1 redundancy in the engineering world. Basically you have an extra in case one breaks

Matt, between my son and I, there is 7. 2 Cases, 2 Fords, 2 MFs and 1 John Deere. I will have 5 at my place. But not sure just yet. May but one of the Cases at sons place. So that would be 4 for me, 3 for him.

I have been told not to use those small pleated paper filters on our low pressure systems as they are too restrictive and plug up easily. BUT I always have, I only had one fail quickly (couple of hours) and that was my fault, I tried to savage 2 gallons of old gas by diluting it with 4 gallons of non ethanol premium gas. I could not see any crud on the filter element, so the crud must have been almost microscopic. I can get those small pleated paper filters at tractor shows for $.50, and for $.75 I can get the larger filter which I have started using figuring that the larger surface area should mean less resistance and longer life.

Hoping we get a month yet without significant snow, but knowing it could come at any time, I followed Noel's lead. :worship:
Won't be mowing any more this year, so deck off the 448.

Got the blade on. Chains can wait.

Have to find some wheel weights or load the tires too.

Looks good Tim. You could also go with a weight box or suitcase weights + wheel weights. I'd post pictures but I don't want to hijack Noel's post.

Post away Matt, I don’t mind. The rear weights on my Cade 446 are front wheel weights from a farm tractor. 75 lbs each.

I'll have to spend a little time looking for some tractor weights. There is usually Case weights for sale locally, but as usual, when you need some you can't find any. :106:

If you have a tractor salvage yard around, Look for JD combine weights for the steering tires. They are made for 16" rims, and come in outer solid weights or inner split weights to fit around the spindle. I have a set of inners, each half is 52 pounds so 104 pounds per tire plus some for nuts and bolts. And mount to the outside of my rims perfectly. I forget but think someone said the outers were 150 or 160 pounds. Now if a guy were lucky enough to find both inner and outer :please:

I am that lucky guy, found both the inner and outer combine weights. And they are great! The outer weights are 162 lbs per piece. The JD part numbers for them are:

H78062
H93849

I called a salvage yard that had a various combines and asked them about these parts numbers. Turns out they had one JD combine with the full set of inner and outer weights. They fit the 400 series rim perfectly. But it was a long drive for me to get them, more than 3 hours one way. :109: I still kick myself for not asking to buy the combine wheels as well. They were 16" diameter, regular 6 bolt pattern, but they had some giant AG tires on them. Oh how nice it would have looked on my 444!!! :((

However, when I go anywhere far I look to see if there's any salvage yard on my way, so that I ask about the combine weights.

For anyone with a three point hitch, it sure is hard to beat concrete. $50 in materials delivers 300 lbs of counterweight that's clean looking and about effortless to install and remove.

The box pictured will hold up to 420 lbs of concrete. (7 bags at 60 lbs each.)
If you build it 20 inches high, it'll hold 8 full bags, your choice.

I chose to fill it to 5 bags, 300 lbs of dry concrete, plus a bit of retained moisture plus the steel, makes it right about 325 lbs of counterweight.

Seen a set of front wheel weights on a David Brown 885 this morning while watching my morning plough match from England. These would fit the 446 nicely. This David Brown front wheels are 6.0 X 16. But these weights would not be to easy to find.
