Ever get that feeling you are being watched?

Post by Gordy »

With the rapidly melting snow, I was picking up stick around the yard. Could not shake the feeling was being watched, then I looked up a bit.

Had to move ;) about 40 feet for a better shot, and yes he was watching

It's always neat to see mother nature out and about. Just over a week ago a young deer was hit by a car just up the street from my house and this bald eagle has been picking over it for a week now. I pulled over in the truck and got very close to watch him. ImageImage

I don't know why it was on the ground nothing dead for it to gnaw on, but a couple years ago we had a baldy in the backyard.

Jancoe,

Years ago I used to travel the lower Peninsula on a regular basis with my dealers. I had my daughter with me one day north of Tawas City, and saw on the side of the highway 3 Bald Eagles picking on parts of a deer. Those were the first eagles I had seen in Michigan. Now we see them all the time near the lakes down here. They are beautiful birds after about 2 years old (white hood and tails)!

Ospreys have moved into this area, also. They present the power company a lot of issues. They like to build their nests on the poles that have transformers on them. They like to build big nests on top of those poles. Every few days the power crew comes out to take the nest of the pole, and before they get back to town the Ospreys are building the nest back. Goes on all summer. Not sure where they go in the winter, but we don't see them in the winter.

There are areas in Ontario where the Ospreys build nest like that as well . So Hydro here builds platforms on the none transformer poles and puts guards over transformers in these areas . They are protected up here and it is easier and cheaper to put up these platforms every 10 years than taking a nest down every other day .

The local power plant put nesting roosts on their smoke stack with webcams for Peregrine Falcons. As do some of the high rise buildings in the Twin Cities. The news stations always show when the chicks hatch.

We have 3 eagle nests that I know of within 25 miles of my house. One site has a observation deck with a telescope, with sign saying not to get closer than the deck as it can cause the eagles to abandon the nest. Which seems funny because one nest is is located 50 feet off the shoulder of a very busy road and people often stop and get out to watch and take pictures.
